A quiet township in New Jersey was shaken on September 20 when a man recklessly crashed an SUV into a local woman’s home and then drove into the police station while blasting Guns N’ Roses’ iconic hit, “Welcome to the Jungle.” John Hargreaves, a 34-year-old resident of Independence Township, now faces decades in prison for his destructive actions.

According to authorities, Hargreaves deliberately targeted the woman’s home in Liberty Township to get back at her for allegedly hypnotizing him. The incident occurred last year, but Hargreaves seemingly harbored a grudge, and his actions on September 20 were his form of revenge.

Warren County Prosecutor Jim Pfeiffer stated that Hargreaves was not satisfied with the way the situation had been handled and decided to make it an issue by lashing out over a year later. Hargreaves’ actions show a complete disregard for the law and the safety of others.

The first incident occurred in Liberty Township when Hargreaves crashed into the garage door of the woman’s home. He then moved on to the Independence Township Police Headquarters, which was the nearest police station to the woman’s home. As the SUV came to rest inside the department’s squad room, blaring Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle,” Hargreaves put his hands in the air and seemed to be celebrating his actions.

While no one was injured in the crashes, Sergeant Khilian Bernard of the Independence Township Police Department narrowly escaped being struck by Hargreaves’ vehicle. He had just started his shift and was taken aback by the incident. Lieutenant Chris Prell told WFMZ that when he heard Bernard’s dispatcher say that a car had crashed into the patrol room, he found it hard to believe.

Hargreaves has been charged with multiple offenses in both crashes, including burglary, criminal mischief, and a weapons count. He also faces more serious charges such as terrorism, aggravated assault, and causing widespread injury or damage. The latter charge could potentially land him behind bars for 30 years.

County prosecutors have stated that Hargreaves does not have legal representation at this time, and his phone number cannot be found. He remains in jail as the Independence Police Department begins to assess the damage and work towards rebuilding their station.

The Independence Township Police Department was fortunate that no one was injured in the crash, but the incident puts a spotlight on the dangers of disregarding the law. Hargreaves’ actions put not only himself but also innocent bystanders and law enforcement officers in harm’s way. It is a reminder of the importance of seeking peaceful and lawful ways to resolve conflicts. As the investigation continues, the community is grateful that no one was hurt and hopeful that justice will be served.
