JD Vance Makes Mistake at National Championship

The one thing someone doesn’t want to do is fumble a championship trophy in front of the team that won it.

But that is exactly what Vice President J.D. Vance did when the Ohio State University football team visited the White House to celebrate its 2025 National Championship win over Notre Dame.

According to the Daily Wire, Vance, an Ohio State graduate, attempted to house the trophy Monday when the two pieces — the upper golden part and black base — separated and fell as Vance tried to recover his fumble in front of the Buckeyes team.

Luckily, teammates TreVeyon Henderson, a running back, and Cody Simon, a linebacker, stepped in to catch the two pieces before they hit the ground.

Vance later took to X to offer an excuse.

“I didn’t want anyone after Ohio State to get the trophy so I decided to break it,” Vance wrote.

During the ceremony, the vice president also called out an audience member wearing a University of Michigan hat.

“I don’t know who let the guy over in the corner here in a Michigan hat into this celebration but I’m about to tell the Secret Service you’ve got a dangerous weapon, sir,” Vance said.

The team won the championship game on Jan. 20 — a date that did not go unnoticed by President Donald Trump since that was his and Vance’s Inauguration Day.

“It turns out January 20 was a big day for all of us,” Trump said.
