In a devastating tragedy, 11 missionaries with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) lost their lives in a horrific traffic accident in Tanzania on Saturday. The incident, which also claimed the lives of several others including the bus driver, has left the Christian community in shock and mourning.
According to initial reports, eight YWAM members were confirmed dead by the organization, with several others in critical condition in local hospitals. However, a Sunday morning update revealed that the death toll had risen to 11 and two were still in critical condition.
The identities of the deceased have not been released for security reasons, but the ministry has assured that they are in the process of notifying their families and providing support during this difficult time. YWAM has also set up a donation link for those who wish to help the affected families and cover any pressing needs that may arise.
The accident occurred in the Ngaramtoni suburb of Arusha, a bustling city in Tanzania, when a truck suspected to have brake failure collided with a bus carrying YWAM leaders and candidates. Reports suggest that the truck also hit two other vehicles, resulting in the loss of 15 lives, including three foreigners, and injuring 12 others.
The local community has been deeply impacted by the tragic accident. Justine Masejo, the Arusha regional commissioner, provided details of the incident and shared the devastation it has caused. Among the vehicles involved was a bus carrying students and teachers from a local school, adding to the already devastating loss of life.
The injured were rushed to major hospitals in the city, where they are receiving medical attention. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, but initial reports suggest a possible brake failure in the truck.
YWAM has urged the public to refrain from spreading unconfirmed reports and to respect the privacy of the families involved. The organization is committed to providing accurate information and updates as they become available.
The loss of these 11 missionaries is not only a tragedy for their families and loved ones, but for the entire Christian community. These dedicated individuals had gathered in Tanzania for a University of the Nations Executive Masters course. Our hearts go out to all those affected by this devastating accident.
