New York City Mayor Eric Adams is no longer seeking re-election.
Adams dropped out of the mayoral race Sunday, announcing his decision in a video post on social media, per Fox News.
Five weeks remain until Election Day. Adams, who was running as a third-party candidate, did not mention his plans for the future.
“Despite all we’ve achieved, I cannot continue my re-election campaign,” Adams said. “The constant media speculation about my future and the campaign finance board’s decision to withhold millions of dollars have undermined my ability to raise the funds needed for a serious campaign.”
“It’s been an honor to be your mayor,” Adams said, adding what he has achieved while in office. This includes crime reduction, housing affordability and economic recovery.
Watch:
Adams has lagged behind Zohran Mamdani, the Democratic candidate and former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, another third-party candidate in campaign fundraising and spending.
Mamdani called Adams’ exit as a pivotal moment in the election.“In just over 5 weeks, we’ll turn the page on the politics of big money and small ideas — and deliver a government every New Yorker can be proud of,” he said in a video post on X.
“Donald Trump and his billionaire donors might be able to determine Eric Adams and Andrew Cuomo’s actions but they will not dictate the results of this election,” Mamdani said.
Watch:
Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa’s campaign said he is the one to beat Mamdani.
“Curtis Sliwa is the only candidate who can defeat Mamdani. Our team, our resources, and our funding are unmatched,” campaign spokesperson Daniel Kurzyna said.
Cuomo lauded Adams for ”putting the well-being of New York City ahead of personal ambition.”
“Mayor Adams has much to be proud of in his accomplishments. Whatever differences we may have, Eric Adams’ story is undeniably one of resilience, a testament to the spirit of this city,” Cuomo said.
Mamdani, 33, has gained national attention, including President Donald Trump, who said “like to see two people drop out” to increase a defeat for Mamdani.
The Trump administration has criticized Mamdani’s economic agenda. It has said it is a threat to business and growth.
