The Howard County Police Department recently uncovered a massive theft operation, recovering around 15,000 stolen construction tools worth between $3 and $5 million. This incredible bust was made possible thanks to a vigilant carpenter determined to catch the culprits.

It all started with a carpenter in Virginia, who, after having his vans broken into twice, decided enough was enough. He took matters into his own hands by hiding multiple AirTags in his larger tools to track the thieves if they struck again. And on January 22, they did. The quick-thinking business owner, employing about 14 workers, tracked the suspects to a storage facility and immediately alerted the authorities.

The Howard County Police Department announced the bust on May 23, calling it “one of the largest and most expansive theft cases in the region in recent years.” The police confirmed the use of a tracking device in their investigation, which began when the AirTag in a stolen tool led officers to a storage unit in Elkridge. From there, detectives conducted search warrants at 12 locations, recovering the vast cache of stolen tools.

According to police, the tools were stolen from a variety of sources, including retail stores, businesses, vehicles, residential properties, and construction sites primarily in Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. Most of the stolen items were kept in storage units in Howard County, and detectives believe they were sold through various channels.

As of now, no suspects have been charged, but the theft case involves around 80 victims. Authorities are urging these victims to contact the police to retrieve their stolen items. The scale of the operation and the recovery effort has been enormous, with Howard County Police Chief Gregory Der expressing his gratitude to his officers for their hard work.

“This case sends a clear message: We will not tolerate criminal enterprises operating here in Howard County,” Der said. “I want to thank the detectives from our special investigations division and all the officers who have helped on this enormous and unprecedented case. They have put in thousands of hours and have many more ahead of them. They will see it through to the end.”

Howard County Executive Calvin Ball also praised the efforts of the police department, saying, “Howard County is a community where all residents should be safe and feel safe, and we just took another giant leap towards achieving that goal. This case shows the tenacity of our police department in their investigations and in their pursuit of justice.”

Thanks to the carpenter’s ingenuity and the relentless work of the Howard County Police Department, thousands of stolen tools have been recovered, bringing justice one step closer for the victims.
