Diane Keaton, one of Hollywood’s most iconic actresses, has died at the age of 79.

The news was confirmed by People magazine early Monday morning. Her family has asked for privacy at this time, and no cause of death has been released.

Keaton’s passing shocked fans and fellow actors around the world. With a career that spanned over five decades, her work touched generations — and her unique style, charm, and voice made her instantly recognizable on screen.

But the story of Diane Keaton wasn’t just about the movies.

Before becoming a household name, Keaton began her career in theater. In 1968, she was cast as an understudy in the original Broadway production of Hair. It didn’t take long for her talent to be noticed. A year later, she was cast in Play It Again, Sam, a Woody Allen play that later became a film — launching a long creative partnership between the two.

Keaton’s breakthrough came in the 1970s, with back-to-back hits that are now considered classics.

She played Kay Adams in The Godfather, a film that would go on to define American cinema. Keaton once admitted in an interview that she hadn’t even read the book before auditioning. “I didn’t know a single thing,” she said. “I just was going around auditioning. And then I had to kind of read the book.”

Then came Annie Hall — a romantic comedy that would shape the genre for decades. Her performance won her the Academy Award for Best Actress, and the film itself became a cultural landmark. The character of Annie, with her quirky outfits and offbeat humor, was seen as a reflection of Keaton herself.

Over the years, Keaton starred in dozens of beloved films. Audiences saw her as a loyal mother in Father of the Bride, a grieving sister in Crimes of the Heart, a fearless divorcee in The First Wives Club, and a mature woman rediscovering romance in Something’s Gotta Give.

She also left her mark on television, with roles ranging from Mannix to The Young Pope. Her portrayal of Amelia Earhart in The Final Flight earned her an Emmy nomination. And more recently, younger fans were introduced to her in an unexpected way — starring as Justin Bieber’s grandmother in the music video for his hit song Ghost.

Though she never married, Keaton adopted two children: Dexter and Duke. In interviews, she often spoke about motherhood as one of the most meaningful parts of her life.

Throughout her career, Keaton was known not only for her acting but for her sense of style. Often wearing wide-brimmed hats, gloves, and menswear-inspired looks, she stood out — and set trends without trying.

Her death leaves behind a legacy of strong characters, unforgettable films, and a presence that was always both bold and deeply human.

For fans who grew up watching her, it’s more than just the loss of a movie star. It feels like the closing of a chapter — a voice, a laugh, a spirit that shaped the movies we love.

Diane Keaton is gone. But her story, her roles, and her influence will live on.
