The story of the Watson family’s recent troubles at a Turks and Caicos airport has been making headlines, and for good reason.
Ryan and Valerie Watson, parents of two young children, were arrested at the airport while returning from a vacation in the islands. The reason? Four rounds of ammunition were found in their carry-on bag.
According to the family’s GoFundMe page, the ammunition was unknowingly left in the bag from a deer hunting trip and was not noticed by TSA when leaving the United States. This simple mistake has now turned their lives upside down as they face potential imprisonment in an unfamiliar and daunting legal system.
The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a travel alert in 2023, warning Americans not to bring ammunition to the islands. The penalty for doing so is a minimum of 12 years in prison. While this may seem severe, the embassy advises travelers to carefully check their luggage for any forgotten weapons or ammunition before departing for Turks and Caicos.
It’s clear that the Watsons made a terrible mistake. They were not aware of the strict laws surrounding firearms in Turks and Caicos, and unfortunately, they are now facing the consequences. While Valerie Watson was released from jail on Tuesday, her husband remains in custody, and there is no current timetable for bail or a trial date.

The family has set up a GoFundMe page to help with their mounting legal fees and living expenses. It’s a stressful and emotional time for the Watsons, and they are at risk of losing everything. As stated on their page, they are pleading for the public’s understanding and support but ask that no one reach out directly to any TCI government officials during this time.
It’s important to note that the Watsons are not seeking to escape punishment for their mistake. They understand the severity of their actions and are willing to face the consequences. However, they also face a financial burden and emotional toll that should not be overlooked.

Ultimately, the Watsons’ story serves as a cautionary tale and a reminder to always be mindful and respectful of the laws and customs of the places we visit and to double and triple check your luggage. Let’s hope for a fair and just resolution for this family as they navigate this difficult time.
