A kangaroo on the lam Tuesday forced law enforcement to shut down an interstate in Alabama while the wayward creature was recaptured.
The kangaroo, known as Sheila, was seen hopping on Interstate 85 in Macon County, located between Montgomery and Auburn, per The Washington Times.
The incident forced law enforcement to close both sides of the interstate as the animal’s owner and troopers went after the animal, Capt. Jeremy J. Burkett of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency reported.
“When somebody said there was a kangaroo, of course I didn’t believe it, and nobody believed it. But I’m looking at him,” Macon County Sheriff Andre Brunson said in a Facebook live video.
Patrick Starr, the kangaroo’s owner, used a dart gun to stop the traveling marsupial, who was captured between Tuskegee and Auburn, the sheriff said, adding, “We see a little bit of everything here.”
Capt. Jeremy J. Burkett of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency told The Associated Press Sheila escaped from her enclosure.
All is well after Sheila was treated by the Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine.
“She’s back home safe. She’s up. She’s not sedated anymore. She’s eating. She’s drinking. She’s not injured,” Starr said.
The family has a pumpkin patch and a petting zoo. Sheila is a personal pet, Starr said.
“She’s a sweet pet. I’m glad she’s back home, and I’m glad everybody slowed down a little bit,” he said.
Motorist Austin Price caught the kangaroo on video.
