President Joe Biden made another trip to Philadelphia on Friday, underscoring the vital importance of Pennsylvania in the upcoming 2024 presidential race. With just under 13 months until the election, new polling suggests that the president may be facing some challenges in winning over voters in this crucial swing state.
Biden’s visit to Philly was at least his 15th since taking office, but the latest polling shows that Pennsylvanians are looking for more from the commander-in-chief. According to a recent Quinnipiac poll, Biden is narrowly trailing former President Donald Trump in a hypothetical match-up. The poll also found that Biden’s favorability rating among Pennsylvania residents is at just 39%.
Jim Schultz, former White House counsel for Trump, believes that the polls are showing a growing dissatisfaction with Biden’s performance, even among Democrats. “It looks better and better for Donald Trump here,” he stated but added that there’s still a long way to go until the election.
However, U.S. Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-Penn.), who serves on the Biden campaign’s national advisory board, remains confident in the president’s chances. He pointed out that past sitting presidents, including Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama, have also trailed in the polls before ultimately winning reelection.
Boyle believes that Biden should continue to focus on his economic message, emphasizing job creation and low unemployment rates. He also defended the president’s frequent visits to Philadelphia, stating that it underscores the city’s key role in deciding the outcome of the election.
Schultz acknowledged that Trump also faces difficulties in winning over voters in Pennsylvania, with his 40% favorability rating and ongoing legal troubles. He also reiterated the crucial role of Pennsylvania in the race, stating, “If they don’t win Pennsylvania, the Democrats don’t win.”
Both Schultz and Boyle agree that winning Pennsylvania is essential for winning the White House. “The reality is that Pennsylvania is the path to the White House,” Boyle stated, emphasizing that Biden recognizes the importance of this state in his reelection campaign.
The president’s frequent trips to Philadelphia, and Pennsylvania in general, demonstrate the critical nature of this state in the upcoming election. Both parties will undoubtedly focus their efforts on winning Pennsylvania, as its outcome could be the deciding factor in the race.
With just over a year until the election, the race for Pennsylvania is heating up, and it remains to be seen who will come out on top. But one thing is clear: both Biden and Trump are putting their best foot forward in this crucial swing state, and the battle for Pennsylvania will be a closely watched one in the months to come.
