You’d think the brutal, senseless deaths of two American teenagers would be enough to make even the most hardened bureaucrat pause and reconsider their policies. But nope — not in Dane County, Wisconsin, where common sense takes a backseat to political performance.
Instead of honoring ICE detainers and working with federal immigration authorities to remove known criminal illegal aliens, Dane County Sheriff Kalvin Barrett is doubling down on a sanctuary policy that just cost 18-year-old Hallie Helgeson and 19-year-old Brady Heiling their lives.
Let that sink in.
Two high school sweethearts, fresh off senior prom, driving down the road like any other kids enjoying the final summer before adulthood — slammed into and killed by a drunk driver who shouldn’t have even been in the country.
And it wasn’t like Noelia Martinez just slipped through the cracks. She had a criminal record. ICE had her in their sights. But because Dane County thinks cooperating with ICE is just a little too controversial, she was free to climb behind the wheel, allegedly drunk, and drive the wrong way on a highway.
The result? One teenager dead at the scene. The other clinging to life for days before finally succumbing to injuries.
And what does Sheriff Barrett have to say about this? Is he calling for reform? Expressing even the faintest glimmer of remorse or self-reflection?
Not a chance.
Barrett’s response? It’s not his fault. He insists ICE should’ve come armed with a criminal warrant signed by a judge, even though that’s not how immigration enforcement works. He knows this. Every sheriff knows this. But they play this game anyway—deliberately setting up a legal hoop they know ICE doesn’t have to jump through, just to block cooperation.
It’s the same tired trick we’ve seen in sanctuary cities all across the country. Pretend it’s about “due process,” when it’s really just about undermining federal immigration law—with deadly consequences.
And the cost isn’t theoretical anymore.
It has names now.
Hallie Helgeson and Brady Heiling.
SAY THEIR NAMES

They were planning their futures. Instead, their parents are planning funerals. And Sheriff Barrett? He’s planning his next media statement defending the exact same policy that shielded their killer.
This isn’t just heartbreaking. It’s infuriating.
Because the truth is, this wasn’t a tragedy. It was avoidable.
Sheriff Barrett called me a LIAR when I warned Dane County’s sanctuary policies put lives at risk.
⁰Now, two teens are dead after a repeat illegal alien offender was allowed to remain in the community. How many more Americans have to die before Democrats end this lawlessness?

If ICE had been allowed to detain Martinez when they tried — if Dane County had done the bare minimum to cooperate with immigration enforcement — two young lives could have been spared. Two families wouldn’t be shattered. A community wouldn’t be in mourning.
The lives of Hallie Helgeson and Brady Heiling were taken by an illegal alien from Honduras who NEVER should have been here.

But the political class in these sanctuary enclaves doesn’t seem to care. They hide behind legalese and bureaucracy, defending policies that coddle lawbreakers and spit in the face of public safety.
And they’ll keep doing it… until voters make them stop.
So, here’s a question that should haunt every official defending these policies:
How many more Hallies and Bradys are you willing to sacrifice for your sanctuary agenda?
Because at this point, we’re not just talking about politics. We’re talking about blood on the pavement.
And Dane County’s leadership is wearing it.
Two Wisconsin teens had their whole lives ahead of them—and they would still be alive today if it weren’t for Noelia Saray Martinez-Avila—a criminal illegal alien from Honduras. You need to see what’s really happening when politics come before protection.
