Democratic New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez is facing charges of bribery offenses in a federal indictment, according to prosecutors from the Southern District of New York.

The indictment, unsealed on Friday, alleges that Menendez and his wife engaged in a corrupt relationship with three New Jersey businessmen, Wael Hana, Jose Uribe, and Fred Daibes. They are accused of accepting bribes in exchange for using Menendez’s power and influence as a senator to benefit Egypt’s businessmen and the government.

The alleged bribes are said to have included cash, gold bars, payments towards a mortgage, a luxury vehicle, and other valuables. Menendez had previously disclosed that his family had accepted gold bars in 2020.

In response to the indictment, Menendez claimed that prosecutors misrepresented the normal work of a Congressional office and accused them of launching a smear campaign against him and his wife. He also suggested that the charges were motivated by a desire to undermine his political career.

Prosecutors claim that Menendez provided sensitive U.S. government information to Hana, an Egyptian-American businessman, which benefited the Egyptian government. They also allege that Menendez improperly pressured a Department of Agriculture official to protect a business monopoly granted to Hana, with Hana then sharing the profits with Menendez.

Additionally, Menendez is accused of interfering with an investigation into Uribe and his associates conducted by New Jersey Attorney General Matt Platkin. The indictment further alleges that Menendez influenced President Biden to nominate a U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey who he believed would be lenient towards his associate Daibes.

The investigation into Menendez included search warrants and a safety deposit box executed at his residence. During the search, FBI agents reportedly found approximately $500,000 in cash stuffed into envelopes, including money in Menendez’s jacket pockets.

Some of the cash and envelopes had fingerprints and DNA matching Daibes. Investigators also discovered a Mercedes Benz allegedly provided by Uribe to the senator and three kilograms of gold.

Menendez was previously indicted on federal bribery charges in 2016, but those charges were dropped by the Department of Justice in 2018. The current probe is unrelated to that case. Menendez has set up a legal defense fund to help with the legal fees associated with the ongoing federal criminal investigation.

While Menendez will be charged, he can continue to serve in the Senate. He is up for re-election in 2024. The investigation is ongoing, and prosecutors have stated their commitment to rooting out public corruption.
