Minnesota Republican gubernatorial candidate Jeff Johnson is facing an unthinkable personal tragedy after his 22-year-old daughter was killed in a domestic stabbing over the weekend in St. Cloud, Minnesota.

Hallie Marie Tobler, 22, died from multiple stab wounds, according to a statement released Sunday by the St. Cloud Police Department. Authorities identified the suspect as her husband, Dylan Michael Tobler, 23, who was found at the scene with what police described as self-inflicted, life-threatening injuries.

Police were dispatched at approximately 8:20 p.m. Saturday to a residence in the 3100 block of 40th Avenue South after receiving a report of a medical emergency. When officers arrived, they discovered Hallie deceased inside the home. Dylan was still alive but critically injured. He was transported to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

In a follow-up statement, police confirmed that Dylan is currently hospitalized under police custody. Upon his release, he is expected to be transported to the Stearns County Jail, where he will face charges related to the homicide.

Court records reveal troubling warning signs leading up to the killing. Just weeks earlier, Dylan had been convicted on a disorderly conduct charge that stemmed from a violent domestic incident involving Hallie. The original citation, issued in late July, stemmed from an incident in mid-June and listed a charge of misdemeanor disorderly conduct for fighting or brawling involving simple assault.

According to the criminal complaint, Dylan choked the victim, identified in court documents as his wife, using the initials HMT. Police were initially called to the same residence on 40th Avenue South for what was described as a welfare check. While officers were in route, they were informed that Dylan had fled the scene in a vehicle and was reportedly incoherent.

The complaint states that Hallie told police her husband was experiencing psychosis and had a history of aggressive behavior. Officers observed physical evidence of violence inside the home, including a broken picture frame and shattered glass. Hallie reportedly told police she believed Dylan was having delusions and said she was alarmed by his behavior.

Despite those details, Dylan was offered a plea agreement that downgraded the charge to a petty misdemeanor disorderly conduct offense. He pleaded guilty and was ordered to pay a $150 fine. Under Minnesota law, petty misdemeanors are not considered crimes, meaning there was no jail time, probation, or further supervision imposed.

The Republican Party of Minnesota released a statement Monday morning offering condolences to Johnson and his family, calling the incident a “tragic loss.” The party also announced that Johnson would be suspending his gubernatorial campaign out of respect for his family and the gravity of the situation.

As of the time of this report, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz had not publicly commented on Hallie Tobler’s death or issued a statement of condolences.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities prepare formal charges and continue to piece together the events that led to the fatal stabbing.
