Ellie Goulding is causing a stir with her request to the Salvation Army.

The Grammy-nominated singer is threatening to back out of a performance at the Dallas Cowboys’ Thanksgiving game halftime show over criticisms aimed at the Salvation Army.

The halftime show, which is part of the annual Red Kettle Campaign, is geared towards providing shelter and meals for the homeless, and gifts for children during the holiday season. Goulding had originally shown her commitment to the cause by posting an Instagram image of herself helping out at a Salvation Army location.

However, some followers criticized the post and claimed the organization does not support the LGBTQ community. In response to the backlash, Goulding threatened to back out of the performance unless the Salvation Army made a “solid, committed pledge or donation to the LGBTQ community.”

It’s still unclear whether the Salvation Army plans to make such a donation or if Goulding will back out of the Thanksgiving Day event. Either way, her intent may be good, but this does not seem like the best way to go about it.

No matter the situation’s outcome, the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign looks to be in for a successful year. The organization is well known for its charitable contributions, including donations to the homeless, veterans, and those in need.

The Salvation Army also provides those in need with food, shelter, housing, after-school programs, job training and placement, and other essential services. It’s no surprise that they’ve been a fixture of the Thanksgiving game for the past 22 years, and it’s clear to see why they remain a cornerstone of holiday philanthropy.
