The story of Sam Brinton, the former Department of Energy official, is a wild one. Not only had Brinton made headlines for becoming the first gender-fluid person to be appointed to the position that oversees nuclear waste policy at the DOE’s Office of Nuclear Energy, but now there are two cases alleging theft of luggage in both Minnesota and Nevada and an incident at Reagan National Airport.
Recently, the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) Police Department confirmed that they had returned articles of clothing that belonged to a Tanzanian fashion designer, Asya Khamsin, that they obtained while executing a search warrant of Brinton’s home.
Khamsin has alleged that Brinton was publicly wearing clothes with her designs, initially in a bag Khamsin reported missing at Ronald Reagan National Airport years ago. The preliminary hearing in the case, filed in Arlington General District Court, has been delayed until December. The MWAA Police further confirmed that they had taken photos of the evidence for prosecution.
In addition, Khamsin filed a civil suit related to the theft against Brinton.
In October and December, police charged Brinton with stealing a traveler’s baggage and another bag containing jewelry, clothing, and makeup respectively, which had an estimated worth of more than $1,000. Brinton faced up to 15 years total in jail for the two alleged thefts. However, the presiding judges ruled jail time wasn’t necessary.
The DOE announced on December 12 that Brinton had left the agency but wouldn’t comment on the reason for the departure.
The whole story of Sam Brinton is one of complex and unexplained circumstances. It remains to be seen how the current case against him and the civil suit will progress. Hopefully, with any luck, justice will be served and the truth of what happened will be revealed.
