Governor Requests Assistance in Lawmaker Return Effort

Oh, Texas Democrats. When the going gets tough… they hop on a plane and bolt to New York. Or Illinois. Or anywhere but their own state, apparently. That’s not leadership. That’s not even protest. That’s pure political theater — the kind you expect from attention-hungry Instagram activists, not elected officials sworn to actually do their jobs.

Here’s what went down: More than 50 Democratic lawmakers ditched the Lone Star State this week in a calculated — and let’s be honest, cowardly — maneuver to deny the Texas House a quorum. Why? Because Republicans are trying to redraw congressional districts in a way that, surprise, actually reflects the state’s overwhelmingly conservative population. The horror! God forbid the map actually favors the people who win elections in Texas.

So what did these noble defenders of “democracy” do? They fled. Literally fled. And let’s not pretend they hit the road like freedom riders, either. They booked flights and posted selfies from the tarmac like they were heading off to a girls’ weekend in Martha’s Vineyard. You can practically hear the inspirational music swelling in the background of their TikToks: We are brave. We are bold. We are… brunching in Boston while Texas burns.

Meanwhile, back in reality, the Texas House voted to arrest them. Yes, arrest. A move that would sound outrageous if the situation weren’t already so absurd. The sergeant-at-arms was ordered to track down these rogue legislators and drag them back to work if necessary. Now, of course, that authority doesn’t extend beyond Texas borders — which makes this entire showdown feel like a game of high-stakes hide-and-seek. But Governor Abbott isn’t laughing. And neither are Texans still waiting on flood relief bills that now sit dead in the water, thanks to this little field trip.

Here’s where it gets even juicier. Abbott hinted that these Democrats could be exposed to felony bribery charges. Why? Because — and you truly can’t make this up — they reportedly solicited donations to fund their taxpayer-funded vanishing act. So now we’re staring down the possibility that these champions of ethics might’ve committed actual crimes while claiming to protect democracy. The irony is almost too thick to chew.

But don’t worry — they’re not hiding. Oh no. They’re busy giving speeches with blue state governors, crying foul about Republican “corruption” while conveniently skipping over the fact that they are, quite literally, interfering with a lawful legislative process. And yes, you read that correctly: The same people who constantly screech about “threats to democracy” just shut down an entire state legislature because they didn’t like how the vote was going to turn out.

Of course, the media is eating it up — parading the fleeing Democrats as civil rights icons in the making, as if skipping out on your duties is now the gold standard of moral courage. Never mind that their actions block everything from education funding to emergency response aid. In their minds, democracy is only sacred when they win. When they lose? They hop on a plane and call it a movement.

And don’t let Rep. Gene Wu’s dramatic press conference fool you. He accused Republicans of hiding things, attacking communities, and being loyal only to Donald Trump. Cute soundbites. But the truth? It’s the Democrats who are hiding — hiding from debates, votes, transparency, and, most of all, from accountability.

“We’re not here to play political games. We’re here to demand, to demand an end to this corrupt process,” said state Rep. Gene Wu, who chairs the Democratic caucus in the state House. “We asked them to stop hiding things from the public. We asked them to stop doing things behind closed doors. We asked them to stop attacking Texas communities. They refused because their loyalty and fealty to Donald Trump overrides all other interests.”

Because what this really is — what it always is — is the politics of tantrum. When the numbers don’t go their way, Democrats don’t try to win hearts and minds. They run, they stall, they sue, and they scream “fascism!” from hotel conference rooms in Chicago. All while Texans wait for them to get back to work.

So the next time you hear some puffed-up speech about how these lawmakers are “saving democracy,” remember: they didn’t walk out — they bailed out. And now, thanks to their little out-of-state vacation, it’s not just the redistricting bill that’s on hold. It’s the entire Texas legislative agenda.

Democracy? Please. This was a group project, and half the team ghosted when it was time to deliver. That’s not bravery. That’s not resistance. That’s just running from the consequences of losing a vote. And Texans aren’t buying the act.
