Indiana Senate Declines Trump Redistricting Plan

Well, well, well… leave it to a group of Republican state senators in Indiana to fumble a perfectly gift-wrapped opportunity to help their own party heading into a pivotal midterm election. Seriously — this is the moment they choose to grow a conscience? In 2025? When Democrats across the country have been redrawing maps with surgical precision (and often with, let’s just say, flexible adherence to the rules), some Indiana Republicans apparently decided now is the time to play nice. How adorably naive.

Despite clear backing from President Donald Trump, strong pressure from conservatives across the country, and a proposal that already cleared the Indiana House, 31 Republican-led state senators looked at the chance to flip two Democrat-held congressional seats and said, “Nah, we’re good.” Bold strategy, let’s see how that works out for them.

Trump’s message was anything but subtle. He warned — loudly and publicly — that a vote against the redistricting plan was a vote against the future of the Republican Party. He even issued his now-familiar threat of “MAGA primaries,” which, if history tells us anything, are not to be taken lightly. Just ask the long list of former Republicans who now enjoy their retirements after being politely (or not-so-politely) escorted out of office by primary challengers more in tune with their voters.

And yet, Indiana State Senate Republicans — led by Rodric Bray and Greg Goode, two shining stars of the “let’s not rock the boat” caucus — decided they’d rather keep the current map intact. Allegedly, Bray even gave the White House the ol’ political double-speak, pretending not to oppose the plan while reportedly whipping votes against it behind the scenes. Vice President J.D. Vance called him out, and Bray’s response? Basically: “I let people vote how they want.” Sure, Rod. That must be why your caucus lined up in near-perfect opposition to something your party’s base overwhelmingly supports.

Let’s be honest. This isn’t about principles. It’s about cowardice, optics, and a deep, misplaced fear of looking “too partisan” while Democrats across the country laugh and redraw their states like Picasso with a political grudge. California just passed Prop. 50, adding five more Democrat-friendly seats. And guess what? The DOJ’s coming after them — but only after the damage is done. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court greenlit Texas’ Republican-favored map, because in case you missed it, that’s how the game is played now. Fairness? Cute idea. Results? That’s what wins majorities.

You’d think Indiana Republicans would get the memo. The House is currently held by the GOP with a razor-thin 220-213 margin. Two seats are vacant. Two seats — like the ones Indiana just declined to go after. This isn’t chess, it’s tug-of-war. And if you’re not pulling, you’re losing ground.

Trump’s frustration isn’t hard to understand. He’s watching state after state push the envelope, draw favorable lines, and prepare for a congressional brawl in 2026. Meanwhile, a red state with a clear opportunity to shift the battlefield… opts for surrender? It’s like handing the Democrats a free pass and then acting surprised when they waltz through it.

Governor Mike Braun at least tried to salvage the mess by calling for a special session — only to be told flatly by Bray that there’s “not enough support.” Translation: they had no stomach for a fight. At a time when the Republican base is energized, the White House is engaged, and the stakes couldn’t be higher, Indiana Senate Republicans decided to fold. Not because they had to, but because they chose to.

So let’s call it what it is: political malpractice. A blown opportunity. A masterclass in how to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. And unless something changes — fast — those same state senators might just find themselves on the wrong side of the next MAGA primary. Because, as Trump put it, “Rod Bray and his friends won’t be in Politics for long.” And frankly, after this mess? They shouldn’t be.
