What are the chances President Donald Trump would become the next pope? Considering he is not even Catholic, the answer to that question is a resounding not likely.
But that did not stop Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) from floating the idea by the Papal Conclave, albeit in jest.
“I was excited to hear that President Trump is open to the idea of being the next Pope. This would truly be a dark horse candidate, but I would ask the papal conclave and Catholic faithful to keep an open mind about this possibility!” Graham said Tuesday on X.
“The first Pope-U.S. President combination has many upsides,” the Baptist continued. “Watching for white smoke…Trump MMXXVIII!”
Watch:
Graham’s post came after Trump jokingly told reporters he’d like to be the next pope.
“I’d like to be pope,” he said. “That would be my number one choice.”
However, Trump added he had “no preference” on who the Catholic Cardinals chose as the next pope, but did nominate Cardinal Timothy Dolan as a good candidate even though he is not expected to be a finalist.
The world’s cardinals will begin its Conclave on May 7. Only those cardinals younger than 80 can vote for the new pope.
Pope Francis died Easter Monday. He was 88.
Meghan McCain reposted Graham’s and added “get a grip” to her own post.
Others on X were not sure how to take Graham’s post:
