Major League Baseball (MLB) is currently facing yet another controversy as the league investigates one of its players, Tucupita Marcano, for allegedly violating their strict gambling policies. The 24-year-old infielder could potentially face a lifetime ban if the allegations are proven true.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Marcano is accused of betting on MLB games last season while he was on the injured list, specifically games involving the Pittsburgh Pirates. The investigation is still ongoing, and details are being finalized as MLB and the MLB Players Association continue negotiations. If the allegations are confirmed, this could be a major blow to Marcano’s career as he faces a lifetime ban from the league.

Representatives for Marcano have chosen not to comment on the matter, and both the MLB and the MLBPA have also refrained from making any statements. The San Diego Padres, the team Marcano was signed with when the alleged incidents occurred, released a statement acknowledging the investigation. However, the team noted that the incidents happened while Marcano was with another organization and not affiliated with the Padres.

“We are aware of an active investigation by Major League Baseball regarding a matter that occurred when the player in question was a member of another organization and not affiliated with the San Diego Padres. We will not have any further comment until the investigative process has been completed,” the San Diego Padres said in a statement.

Marcano’s last appearance in an MLB game was in 2023 for the Pirates before suffering a season-ending injury. He began his MLB career with the Padres in 2021 and has played in 149 games with a .217 batting average and five home runs. The investigation into Marcano is part of a larger trend of gambling-related issues in sports since the Supreme Court’s decision to legalize sports betting in the US six years ago.

The news of Marcano’s investigation is just the latest in MLB’s struggles with gambling-related issues. Earlier this year, the league banned a player for gambling violations, and a high-profile baseball interpreter was charged with embezzling funds to cover gambling debts.
