Naples Mayor Teresa Heitmann took to the podium during a Naples City Council meeting on Wednesday morning to publicly address her recent DUI arrest, offering a heartfelt apology to the community. In a prepared statement, Heitmann expressed deep regret for her actions, acknowledging the profound impact the incident has had on her family, friends, and constituents.
“I am profoundly sorry for the impact that it has had on my friends, family, constituents, city staff, and the public,” she said, reading from her statement. Heitmann emphasized that she takes her responsibilities as mayor seriously and sought to assure the public that she remains committed to serving with integrity despite the personal toll of the arrest. She thanked those who had shown her support, expressing gratitude for their kindness and understanding during this difficult time.
Heitmann’s apology comes in the wake of her DUI arrest, an incident that has sent shockwaves through the Naples community. According to the police report, Heitmann was arrested after a couple reported that she was following them home and behaving erratically, even claiming to be the mayor. When officers arrived, they administered a breathalyzer test, which showed Heitmann’s blood alcohol content (BAC) to be between 0.155 and 0.169—more than twice the legal limit.

For some, the mayor’s apology may not be enough. Larry Coggins, Regional Executive Director of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), pointed out the serious implications of driving under the influence, especially for someone in a leadership position. “Here’s a person that works for the people, elected by the people, put all those people in danger,” Coggins said, adding that the fact no one was harmed in the incident was a matter of grace, not luck.
Coggins went on to stress that a DUI is far more than just a mistake or a minor traffic offense, especially given the potential for tragedy. He emphasized the devastating impact that drunk driving has had on families, urging the public to understand that such incidents have lifelong consequences. “Try looking at the eyes of these parents that don’t have their children anymore… and you tell them it’s just a whoopsie,” Coggins remarked.
Mayor Heitmann concluded her address by reaffirming her commitment to the people of Naples. With 12 years of public service under her belt, she stated that she hopes the community will forgive her and allow her the opportunity to regain their trust. She promised to reflect on her actions and work to earn back the respect of those she serves.
In response to media inquiries following her arrest, Heitmann issued a brief statement via text message, apologizing for her “mistake” and indicating that she had hired an attorney. She declined to comment further, citing legal counsel, but reiterated her remorse.
People make mistakes all the time, but it’s 2024; just call an Uber. It’s cheaper and way less humiliating.
