When we think of tornadoes, we usually imagine swirling clouds of debris and dust. But in the west Indian city of Pune, what we see are vast swarms of mosquitoes hovering in the sky. Some residents have compared it to a scene straight out of a horror movie, while others have likened it to a mesmerizing murmuration of starlings.

But let’s get one thing straight – this is no beautiful sight to behold. These mosquitoes are not your friendly, garden variety of insects. They pose a serious threat to the residents of Pune due to the diseases they spread.

Mosquito Tornados in Pune

Many people are unable to leave their homes for fear of being bitten, and even children are not allowed to play in gardens or parks. The reason for this alarming rise in mosquito numbers is due to the recent increase in water levels at the Mula Mutha River, providing the perfect breeding ground for these insects.

As we all know, mosquitoes are responsible for spreading several tropical diseases such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya, and yellow fever. And in India, almost 40 million people get infected with these diseases each year. They are considered the deadliest creatures on the planet, responsible for millions of deaths throughout history.

So it’s no surprise that the residents of Pune are concerned and worried about this situation. A local resident from Kharadi neighborhood, Nitin, shared his experience with ANI news, stating, “Recently, I have seen a lot of mosquitoes. For three or four days, there has been a tornado of mosquitoes here in Kharadi. There have been a lot of problems, and the locals are having difficulties due to this.”

This is not something to be taken lightly. The UK Foreign Office advises that these diseases occur all year round in India but are more widespread during the monsoon season, which runs from June to September. So if you are planning to travel to Pune or any other affected area, make sure to take the necessary precautions and protect yourself from mosquito bites.

I hope the authorities in Pune take swift action to address this issue and protect its residents from these dangerous and pesky insects. Let’s all hope for a quick solution before this situation escalates further.
