A failed robbery attempt at a Nottingham post office has shed light on the increasing incidents of shoplifting and theft in the United Kingdom.
On February 10th, CCTV footage captured 36-year-old Jelanie Scott trying to use a large spoon to steal money through a security screen at the Hyson Green Post Office.
Thanks to the quick action of the staff and the triggering of panic alarms, Scott was unable to succeed in his attempt and fled the scene.
However, the evidence against him was overwhelming, and he was later arrested and charged with attempted burglary. In a recent court hearing, Scott pleaded guilty and admitted to his actions, blaming them on mental distress and drug use.
He was sentenced to a six-month drug rehabilitation program and fined a total of £283 (around $360).
The incident at the Hyson Green Post Office is just one of many that have been reported in recent months, as shoplifting and theft rates have seen a significant increase in the U.K.
According to official crime data, shoplifting incidents have risen by 25% for the year ending in June 2023. This surge has been attributed to various factors such as opportunistic thieves, marauding teenagers, drug addicts, and organized gangs.
Shop owners have been feeling the brunt of this trend, with some reporting having to deal with three to four robberies a day. One shop owner even described the situation as “like the Wild West.”
