Trump Pauses Tariffs On Some But Not Others

Well, well, well. Here we go again. The media and the political class are in full meltdown mode because President Trump had the audacity to—gasp!—use leverage to protect American jobs and national security. The latest dust-up? Trump agreed to delay a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico for 30 days, and predictably, the usual suspects are clutching their pearls, warning of “chaos” and a “looming trade war.”

Let’s start with the obvious: Trump is playing chess while the rest of these so-called leaders are still struggling with checkers. The deal he struck with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau? That wasn’t just about avoiding tariffs—it was about securing the border, something Trudeau should have been doing all along. And now, after a couple of last-minute phone calls, Trudeau is suddenly promising to crack down on illegal migration and fentanyl trafficking. Amazing how quickly priorities shift when there’s economic pressure involved.

Then there’s Mexico. President Claudia Sheinbaum (yes, Mexico now has its first female president) agreed to send 10,000 National Guard troops to their northern border. That’s right—Mexico is now stepping up its enforcement efforts because Trump put the heat on. In return, the U.S. is making efforts to curb the illegal gun trade into Mexico. Fair deal? Sure. But let’s not forget that this is something Mexico should have been handling on its own without needing a tariff threat to get them moving.

Meanwhile, Trump isn’t backing down on China. A 10% tariff on Chinese goods just kicked in, and—shocker—Beijing isn’t happy. They retaliated with their own set of tariffs, targeting American coal, crude oil, and agricultural machinery. But here’s the thing: China has been playing dirty for decades, manipulating currency, stealing intellectual property, and flooding our markets with cheap goods. Trump is simply giving them a taste of their own medicine, something previous administrations were too weak (or too compromised) to do.

And, of course, the globalist crowd is losing their minds. Economists—many of whom have been wrong for years—are sounding the alarm that tariffs could raise prices on everyday goods. But let’s take a reality check: China has been subsidizing its industries, undercutting American manufacturing, and engaging in unfair trade practices for decades. If the cost of standing up to them means a temporary bump in prices, that’s a small price to pay for long-term economic sovereignty.

Meanwhile, in Canada, we’re seeing the usual hand-wringing. Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Andrew Furey is out there lamenting how Canadians feel “attacked” by their “closest friend.” Well, Andrew, maybe instead of feeling attacked, you should be asking why Canada let its border and drug problem spiral so far out of control in the first place. Trump isn’t waging a war on Canada—he’s forcing Canada to take responsibility for its own issues, which, frankly, benefits both countries in the long run.

And let’s talk about Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who at least has the sense to recognize that Trump’s tariff delay provides a temporary reprieve. But he also understands that this isn’t over. Trump isn’t the type to bluff. He’s made it clear that if Canada and Mexico don’t hold up their end of the bargain, those tariffs will be back on the table in a heartbeat.

Looking ahead, Trump has his sights set on the European Union, and let’s just say they’re not going to get a free pass either. For too long, the EU has taken advantage of America with lopsided trade deals, and Trump knows it. Britain might get a better deal simply because they had the good sense to get out of the EU mess back in 2020. But the rest of the bloc? They’d better get ready because Trump’s America isn’t going to keep being the world’s piggy bank.

The bottom line is this: Trump is using every tool at his disposal to protect American workers, secure the border, and end unfair trade practices. The establishment hates it, the media can’t stand it, and foreign leaders are scrambling to adjust. But one thing is certain—this is exactly the kind of leadership America needs.
