President Donald Trump seemed optimistic following a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin as the two leaders agreed to meet next week.
Trump took to Truth Social Thursday to report how the call went, calling it “a very productive one.”
The president said he will meet in person with Putin in Budapest, Hungary, for a second time in an effort to end the war in Ukraine, per NBC News.
Trump is expected to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Friday at the White House “where we will discuss my conversation with President Putin, and much more,” he said.
Trump said he and Putin “agreed that there will be a meeting of our High Level Advisors, next week.”
A meeting location has yet to be determined.
The U.S. delegation will include Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
“President Putin and I will then meet in an agreed upon location, Budapest, Hungary, to see if we can bring this ‘inglorious’ War, between Russia and Ukraine, to an end,” Trump wrote on social media.
The president also wrote, “I believe great progress was made with today’s telephone conversation.”
The two met in Alaska in August in an effort to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, but did not result in peace.
Putin also noted Trump’s work in attaining peace in the Middle East.
“President Putin congratulated me and the United States on the Great Accomplishment of Peace in the Middle East, something that, he said, has been dreamed of for centuries,” Trump wrote. “I actually believe that the Success in the Middle East will help in our negotiation in attaining an end to the War with Russia/Ukraine.”
