Hello everyone. We have some deeply troubling news from northern England today. In a shocking incident, two children were killed and nine others injured in a knife attack targeting a Taylor Swift-themed dance class. The tragic event unfolded in the town of Southport, just north of Liverpool, on Monday. The police have arrested a teenage suspect, who witnesses say turned the scene into something resembling a “horror movie.”
Merseyside Police’s Chief Constable Serena Kennedy provided an update on the situation. She reported that six of the injured children are in critical condition, alongside two adults who were also critically wounded while trying to protect the kids from the attacker. The police received emergency calls around 11:50 a.m. local time, and a 17-year-old boy was apprehended at the scene on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.
The motive behind this gruesome attack remains unclear, though Counterterrorism Police Northwest is supporting the investigation. Despite the severity, the incident is not currently being treated as terror-related.
Colin Parry, a local business owner, described the scene as something out of a nightmare, filled with panicked parents and wounded children. Parry had directed the police to the Hart Space studios on Hart Street, where the Taylor Swift-themed class for children aged six to eleven was taking place.
Another resident recounted the harrowing moment when a frantic mother arrived, screaming that her daughter had been stabbed. He helped the injured child reach the police and paramedics, who were already attending to other young victims.
In response to the crisis, the Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool declared a “major incident,” urging parents to visit the emergency department only for urgent matters due to the overwhelming situation.
Expressions of shock and sympathy have poured in from across the UK. King Charles and the Queen Consort issued a heartfelt statement, extending their deepest condolences to the victims’ families and all those affected. The Prince and Princess of Wales also shared their support for the victims and gratitude for the emergency responders.
