Things Heat Up On ‘The View’ Surrounding California Vote

A heated debate broke out Monday on ABC’s “The View” after co-hosts Alyssa Farah Griffin and Sunny Hostin clashed over California’s lengthy vote-counting process.

The discussion came as the race for second place in Los Angeles’ mayoral contest tightened. Reality TV personality Spencer Pratt had fallen behind progressive candidate Nithya Raman as more ballots were counted and added to the tally.

The panel opened the segment by airing a clip of President Donald Trump criticizing NBC News moderator Kristen Welker and claiming election misconduct was happening in California. That prompted moderator Whoopi Goldberg to question why fraud allegations often seem to emerge when one political side is losing.

Griffin said the country has now seen years of claims about stolen elections, even though investigations and court challenges have repeatedly failed to produce evidence proving widespread fraud. Still, she argued that long counting periods can make voters suspicious, especially when results continue shifting days or weeks after Election Day.

“People tend to not trust elections when it takes a real long time to count votes,” Griffin said. “LA, and California in general, need to figure out how to do this quicker.”

She pointed to Florida as a state that processes a large number of mail ballots while still reporting results quickly, often on election night.

“Change the laws so you can do it in one day,” Griffin said. “Florida has a lot of mail-in, and they get their results the same night.”

Hostin pushed back immediately. She argued that election officials should focus on accuracy, even if that means the process takes longer. She defended California’s system, noting that officials verify ballot signatures and contact voters when there are problems that need to be fixed.

“I feel the exact opposite,” Hostin said. “I think if someone is taking their time to count the votes, I think if someone is looking at every single thing … it does take a long time to be right, to do it well.”

The exchange grew sharper when Griffin questioned why Florida could finish its count so quickly while California could not.

“Why can Florida do it right in one night, though?” Griffin asked.

Hostin pointed to California’s size and the number of voters in the state.

“I don’t think you can do it when you have 23 million registered voters. It’s just not possible!” she said.

Griffin argued that California could speed up the process by allowing more mail ballots to be processed earlier. Hostin maintained that the state’s large volume of vote-by-mail ballots creates a different challenge.

California has about 23 million registered voters and offers several ways to cast a ballot, including mail voting, vote centers, secure drop boxes, and provisional ballots. The state also allows ballots to arrive after Election Day as long as they are postmarked on time. Voters are also given a chance to fix signature or identification issues, which can extend the counting timeline.

Election officials have said the system is built to count every valid ballot, even when that means final results take longer.

“California law prioritizes counting every valid ballot, not just the fastest ballots,” a spokesperson for the Los Angeles County Registrar previously told The California Post.
