President Donald Trump hosted a dinner on Thursday with comedian Bill Maher, musician Kid Rock, and sports commentator Stephen A. Smith. The president told reporters on Friday that the group had a “great dinner” and a “very informative dinner.” He described the guests as “smart people” while leaving the White House for a trip to Georgia.

News of the gathering first appeared on social media from the DC bar Madams Organ. The bar posted photos showing Maher and Smith enjoying live music before heading to the White House. Naturally, they arrived to witness a couple sets from KingPin Blues.

A Shift From Past Insults

This dinner marks a sharp turn from comments Trump made just months ago. In June 2026, Trump called Stephen A. Smith a “low IQ individual” and an “arrogant fool.” He also stated Smith was “dumb as a rock” after the commentator criticized a Knicks game visit.

Bill Maher has also faced harsh words from the president in the past. Maher once called Trump “a person who plays a crazy person on TV”, according to the New York Post. Yet Trump told reporters on Friday that he actually likes Maher.

Inside the Ballroom Tour

The president said the evening lasted a long time and covered many topics. He noted that they even toured the White House ballroom together. “We even took a little tour of the ballroom,” Trump explained, according to RedState. He added that the conversation was “very substantive” and called Smith “great.”

Stephen A. Smith called the event a “very substantive evening” in his own remarks. Trump believes these guests hide their true feelings from their own followers, noting that “they have to sort of put on a certain little facade for their people”.

This meeting shows how quickly political lines can blur in the real world. You might see people you disagree with sitting down to eat with the leader of the free world. It reminds us that personal relationships often matter more than public arguments. The president made it clear he values the conversation more than the past insults.

Trump told reporters, “I think they had a good time. We talked about everything, it lasted a long time.” This approach focuses on talking things out rather than fighting forever. It suggests that even those who clash publicly can find common ground when they sit down together. The ballroom tour and the long talk show that the door remains open for dialogue.
