While on duty, a 23-year veteran of the Fairfax County Police Department stole items from two Target stores. Officer Scott Abram used a cheaper barcode to pay less for goods at a Burke location. He left the store with products he did not fully pay for. This act happened while he wore his uniform and was working.
Police say Abram committed a similar theft at a different Target the day before. That second incident occurred at a Springfield store while he was off duty. He chose to retire rather than face termination for these actions. Each charge is a misdemeanor that can carry up to 12 months in jail. A conviction also brings a fine of up to $2,500 per count. Per Reason Magazine, the officer retired before he could be fired by his department.
College Aid Scandal in Ontario
Government inspectors in Ontario found serious problems at three Academy of Learning institutions. These schools showed concerning growth in applications for student financial aid. Investigators found signs that other people might have done the students’ schoolwork. In as little as minutes or a single day, some students finished whole courses. A few students could not even name their school or program of study.
From many different locations, inspectors also found shared computer logins. The schools could not prove that funded students were really taking the classes they claimed. More than $219 million in student aid money was taken in by these three locations. That sum covered about 14,800 students in just one year. That aid use by new students at the schools was stopped by the province. Denying most of the claims, the colleges are fighting the decision in court. According to Reason Magazine, the government acted to protect the aid program from fraud.
