Vice President JD Vance told a crowd in Michigan that he might not run for president in 2028. He spoke at a town hall hosted by CBS News on a Saturday. Vance said the choice is still open. New York Post reported that he acknowledged he could sit out the next election.

When asked directly about a future run, Vance gave a clear answer. “Of course there’s a chance,” he said. He explained that his family comes first. He has four little kids and a wife who does not love the political life. RedState noted that he said his wife loves public service instead.

Family Comes Before Politics

Vance described his personal reasons for hesitating on a 2028 bid. He said, “We’ve got four little kids, my wife has never loved politics. She loves public service.” This quote appears in reports from Washington Examiner as well. He admitted that raising children takes time away from campaigning. His wife prefers serving the community without the spotlight.

He also called himself a procrastinator when it comes to big life choices. “The way that I think about big life decisions, my wife will tell you this, is I’m a procrastinator. I hate thinking about it,” he said. He plans to wait until after the midterm elections to decide. Washington Examiner reported he will think about it once Mike Rogers wins the Senate seat in Michigan.

Early Poll Numbers Show a Lead

Despite his hesitation, Vance is seen as a top contender to succeed President Trump. New York Post noted that President Trump called him his most likely successor. Polling data backs this up. RealClear Polling shows Vance with a 15-point lead over Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Vance holds 39 percent support more than two years before the election.

Donald Trump Jr. sits in third place with 11 percent support. Vance is on a long list of potential candidates. This list includes Democrats like Gavin Newsom and Kamala Harris. Washington Examiner mentioned the town hall took place in Monroe, a small city near Detroit. The event drew attention from many who expect him to run.

What Happens After November

Vance said he will make a real decision after the next election cycle. He told the crowd that anything can happen. “But, you know, anything can happen, man, anything,” he stated. He wants to see how the political landscape shifts after November. He will not commit to a run right now.

The Vice President also talked about other issues during the event. He addressed questions on gas prices and foreign policy. “I will be the first one to tell you gas prices are too high,” he said. He noted that the military has made progress against threats. He said he trusts the American people to make the right choices for their country.
