Trump Targets Rebellious GOP Congressman

The political landscape within the Republican Party is once again aflame with controversy as former President Donald Trump has set his sights on Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, urging that the congressman be primaried. In a scathing Truth Social post on Monday night, Trump labeled Massie a “grandstander” and compared him to former Rep. Liz Cheney, whose political career was effectively ended after her opposition to Trump. But rather than retreat, Massie seized the moment, using Trump’s attack as an opportunity to galvanize his supporters and raise funds for his re-election bid.

Trump’s criticism of Massie is rooted in the congressman’s refusal to toe the line on government funding. While Trump has urged Republicans to support a stopgap funding measure to prevent a partial government shutdown, Massie remains firmly opposed. The Kentucky representative has long been known as a fiscal hawk, consistently pushing back against what he sees as reckless government spending. His defiance has earned him both praise and scorn within conservative circles, with some viewing him as a principled defender of limited government, while others—Trump included—see him as an obstructionist.

The former president’s comparison of Massie to Cheney is particularly striking, given Cheney’s role in Trump’s impeachment and her subsequent downfall in the Republican Party. Trump-backed Harriet Hageman overwhelmingly defeated Cheney in Wyoming’s 2022 primary, a fate he seems eager to see repeated in Massie’s case. However, Massie remains undeterred, firing back on social media that his voting record is based on principles, not political pressure.

“Someone thinks they can control my voting card by threatening my re-election. Guess what? Doesn’t work on me,” Massie posted defiantly.

This latest clash underscores the ongoing battle within the GOP between Trump’s brand of populist politics and a more traditional conservative approach. While Trump has reshaped the party in his image, figures like Massie continue to challenge the idea that loyalty to Trump should outweigh ideological convictions.

Meanwhile, Sen. Mike Lee of Utah has come to Massie’s defense, lauding him as one of the hardest-working members of Congress when it comes to reining in federal spending. Lee’s endorsement highlights the divide within the party, with some conservatives rallying around Massie as a bulwark against runaway government expenditures, even as Trump seeks to push him out.

This is not the first time Trump has taken aim at Massie. In 2020, he called for the congressman’s expulsion from the GOP after Massie attempted to force an in-person vote on a COVID-19 relief bill. Yet, despite Trump’s opposition, Massie easily won his primary that year and went on to secure re-election. In a surprising twist, Trump later endorsed Massie in 2022—a move that makes his latest attack all the more notable.

The question now is whether Trump’s influence will be enough to unseat Massie in a Republican primary. While Trump’s endorsements have been decisive in many races, Massie’s deep-rooted support in his district and his reputation for sticking to his principles may give him an edge. If history is any indication, Massie is more than willing to take on the fight.
