This time, it’s Rep. LaMonica McIver of New Jersey, accused by the Department of Justice of putting her hands on Homeland Security agents during what prosecutors are describing as a full-blown melee outside an ICE detention facility. Of course, she claims it’s all political. Because when in doubt, scream persecution, right?
Let’s take a moment to appreciate the irony here. The very people who spent four years screeching “no one is above the law” every time President Trump sneezed are now frothing at the mouth because one of their own is being held to that exact same standard. The Department of Justice, led by acting U.S. Attorney Alina Habba, isn’t playing games. Habba made it clear—“no one is above the law, politicians or otherwise.” That’s a refreshing change from the usual bureaucratic shrug we get when a Democratic politician goes rogue. According to prosecutors, McIver was caught on video pushing her way through agents as they attempted to arrest Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, another Democrat who was trespassing inside a federal facility.
Baraka, by the way, had been told to leave by law enforcement, did so, and then was arrested just outside. And now, like clockwork, he’s painting himself as the cooperative victim. Oh, and his charges? Dropped “for the sake of moving forward.” Translation: political optics were getting messy.
McIver and her allies are crying foul, calling the charges an “illegitimate abuse of power.” Let’s unpack that. A federal agent gets shoved while enforcing the law and it’s their fault for “escalating” things? McIver’s lawyer even suggested the chaos was ICE’s doing—as if law enforcement should just roll out the red carpet for grandstanding politicians who think federal property is their personal stage for protest theater.

And let’s not forget her own words: “I don’t know how to body slam anyone.” Well, maybe not, but the video seems to show her doing something that most Americans would recognize as a pretty aggressive physical confrontation—whether it qualifies as a full “body slam” or not. Maybe the left should stop parsing language like lawyers in a mob trial and look at the facts: there’s video. There are charges. There are consequences.
Naturally, House Democratic leadership didn’t waste any time calling the prosecution “morally bankrupt,” as if it’s somehow immoral to enforce the law when it interferes with their agenda. Newsflash: checking up on an ICE facility doesn’t come with the bonus perk of manhandling officers. There’s a difference between legislative oversight and mob behavior. One is done with subpoenas and hearings. The other? Apparently, with elbows and righteous indignation.
And here’s the part that really puts the cherry on top: the same Democrats who are always lecturing us about civility and norms and how we need to “restore trust in institutions” are now slamming the Justice Department for daring to prosecute one of their own. You can’t demand blind respect for federal authority when it’s raiding Mar-a-Lago, and then turn around and accuse that same authority of fascism when it comes after a Democrat with a bad temper.

This whole debacle is a master class in hypocrisy. If Rep. McIver did nothing wrong, then she’ll have her day in court to prove it. But if she did shove a federal agent, she’s not a hero. She’s a lawbreaker. And no amount of political spin or group outrage therapy from the Democratic caucus will change that.
