The Call and the Death

President Trump declared that he intends to converse “very soon” with Russian President Vladimir Putin about a suspected plague outbreak in Siberia. The call follows the death of 28-year-old lab technician Daria Shipilova at an anti-plague research institute near Irkutsk. Trump told reporters at the White House, “I have a call scheduled very soon”, according to the New York Post.

Shipilova died on Friday after falling ill, sparking global fears about a potential lab leak or exposure to a deadly pathogen. Russian officials state she died of “pneumonia of unknown etiology” and deny any accident occurred at the facility. A local town went into lockdown shortly after her death to contain the spread of illness.

Trump emphasized that the United States stands ready to assist Russia if an outbreak is confirmed. He told reporters, “Anybody that has that kind of a problem, we’re always willing to help”, according to NBC News. The President called the pneumonic plague “a rough disease” and expressed his desire to see the situation resolved.

Official Responses and Concerns

Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized there is no reason for alarm while the U.S. keeps watch over the evolving situation. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed it is watching the case but noted there is “no indication of a broader threat” to the United States, according to the Washington Examiner. Russian health watchdog Rospotrebnadzor stated that testing found no microorganisms linked to the worker’s job.

Some reports claimed Shipilova accidentally broke a vial of the plague bacteria, but Russian authorities have dismissed this idea. The governor of the Irkutsk region said no other workers have sought medical attention and the situation remains under control. Trump said, “We’re in very deep discussions” regarding the incident with Russian officials.

Trump noted that germs have become stronger and that old treatments for pneumonia are less effective today. He stated, “The germs have really become relatively stronger than they were, and things that used to work on pneumonia don’t work as well anymore”. Despite tensions over the war in Ukraine, Trump views Putin as someone he can work with on such issues.

What Comes Next

Trump indicated that he and his team expect to provide more details on the situation tomorrow. He told reporters, “We will be able to report about it probably tomorrow”. The White House continues to coordinate with Russian counterparts to ensure transparency about the cause of Shipilova’s death.

U.S. officials have been in contact with the Russian government since Friday following the initial reports of the death. The focus now shifts to the upcoming phone call between the two leaders to discuss containment and potential aid.

Trump reiterated his willingness to support Russia, stating simply, “We’ll help”. This direct approach aims to prevent a wider health crisis while maintaining diplomatic channels open during a tense period. The outcome of this call will determine the next steps for international health cooperation.
