Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will resign as leader of the Liberal Party and from his position as prime minister once another is chosen.

The news of Trudeau’s resignation came Monday, per The Hill.

The reasons for the resignations include a poorly performing Liberty Party as well as tensions with President-elect Donald Trump, who has threatened hefty tariffs and border concerns.

“I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister,” Trudeau said.

“Last night, I asked the president of the Liberal Party to begin that process. This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I’m having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election,” Trudeau added.

The 53-year-old Tredeau has served as prime minister for nine years and has been Liberal leader for 11. However, he was facing increasing crises and troubling polls against the Conservative Party, which is led by Pierre Poilievre.

Trudeau has recently been under fire regarding many issues, including the confrontation with the U.S. over Trump’s threats of 25% tariffs, conflict over immigration, and a high cost of living.

An emergency meeting of Liberal legislators is set to take place on Wednesday.

Canada’s general elections will be held on or before Oct. 20.

Trump has called Trudeau Canada’s “governor” in light of Trudeau’s reaction to Trump’s 25% tariffs on Canada.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned in mid-December. Freeland criticized Trudeau as pursuing “costly political gimmicks” while confronting Trump’s tariff threats.
