With only days left in Michigan’s Senate race, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed faces a major internal struggle. His primary rival, Rep. Haley Stevens, is actively working to undermine his campaign. The conflict centers on El-Sayed’s stance regarding Israel and his outreach to Black voters. Establishment Democrats reportedly prefer losing the Senate seat rather than seeing him win.
Breitbart stated that The Intercept described the Muslim winning the senate seat as “the nightmare they fear most”. This report highlights a deep split within the party just before the general election. Centrist Democrats are reportedly willing to let the seat go to avoid supporting El-Sayed. This stance comes despite his victory in the primary earlier this year.
Trump Weighs In On The Race
President Trump made his position clear during a visit to the state. Addressing the crowd, he stated, “I’m here today in Michigan for a very important reason, I’m here to keep a jihadist Muslim Brotherhood member from becoming a United States senator, and that’s the fact. We’re not going to let that happen,” as Breitbart noted. His comments frame the election as a critical battle against what he sees as a dangerous ideology. Trump has made stopping El-Sayed a top priority for his campaign efforts in the region.
Pressure From Party Leaders
The pressure on El-Sayed intensified after an ad tied rising domestic prices to U.S. military aid for Israel. Cenk Uygur, a presenter for The Young Turks, produced the ad alongside his Rebellion PAC. El-Sayed and his campaign had no involvement in distributing or producing the advertisement. On Thursday, the campaign offered a conciliatory gesture by distancing itself from the controversial message. However, this move did not stop the criticism from coming.
Haley Stevens leveraged the condemnation to launch a scathing denouncement against her former opponent. She lost to El-Sayed in the Democratic primary for Senate in August. Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi also weighed in on the situation. Per Breitbart, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) criticized El-Sayed, noting that his radical, anti-Israel views are “more than concerning”. Pennsylvania Rep. John Fetterman also said he cannot support “pro-Hamas candidate” El Sayed.
Money Spent To Stop The Primary
The establishment fought hard to prevent El-Sayed from reaching this point. Following the primaries that placed El Sayed atop the Democrat ticket, it emerged that establishment Democrats spent $63.9 million attempting to stop the Muslim candidate’s campaign. Despite this massive financial effort, he won the primary anyway. The money failed to stop his momentum among the voters who chose him.
El-Sayed now faces a fractured coalition as the general election nears. His rivals argue that his views on Israel make him unelectable for the broader electorate. The campaign continues to navigate these internal attacks while trying to secure votes. The outcome of this race will show if the party can unite behind a candidate they tried to block.
