D.C. Police Union Supports Trump’s Capital Proposal

Well, that’s awkward. While D.C.’s Democrat leadership is clutching its pearls over President Trump’s decision to federalize the Metropolitan Police Department, the city’s own police union — representing over 3,000 officers — just came out and said, “Yeah, we’re good with it.”

In a statement that must have sent shockwaves through Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office, the D.C. Police Union agreed with Trump that crime is “spiraling out of control” and that “immediate action is necessary to restore public safety.” They even called the president’s move to take control of MPD a needed step — though they politely suggested it should be temporary. Translation: We’d like to run our own city, but we can’t do that when politicians are busy pretending everything’s fine.

Trump, never one to downplay a moment, declared Monday “Liberation Day in D.C.” and vowed to “rescue our nation’s capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam, and squalor, and worse.” Under his order, MPD now falls under the Department of Justice, with DEA Administrator Terry Cole tapped to lead the department. Oh, and he’s sending in 800 National Guard troops to patrol the streets — a move sure to set Twitter on fire.

Naturally, Democrats in the city wasted no time denouncing the plan. Bowser called it “unsettling and unprecedented” but admitted that, thanks to Section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rule Act, Trump is fully within his rights to do it. The city council, meanwhile, went into full spin mode, claiming violent crime is at “the lowest rates we’ve seen in 30 years” and calling Trump’s move “a manufactured intrusion on local authority.”

The council’s statement even dismissed the National Guard’s involvement, saying they have “no public safety training” and “no real mission” in D.C. But here’s the catch — the White House says the council’s version of the crime numbers is, well, a work of fiction. According to administration officials, D.C. has been “cooking the books” to make the crime stats look better, while the reality is grim: a homicide rate of 27.3 per 100,000 residents in 2024, the fourth-highest in the nation.

That’s not just bad — it’s nearly six times higher than New York City and worse than Atlanta, Chicago, and Compton. Oh, and higher than Havana, Cuba, and Islamabad, Pakistan. Yes, you read that right — our nation’s capital is statistically more dangerous than two places most Americans wouldn’t exactly describe as vacation hot spots.

But the council insists there’s no “federal emergency.” Tell that to the residents who’ve watched carjackings, robberies, and murders surge over the last few years while city leadership focused on political grandstanding instead of public safety. The police union clearly sees the problem — and they’re the ones actually responding to 911 calls.

So here we are: Trump says he’s saving the city. The union says they’re on board. The mayor says she’ll “coordinate” while clearly fuming. And the city council says nothing’s wrong… as long as you ignore the crime rate, the stats, and the bodies.

Something tells me this “temporary” federal takeover is going to reveal more about how bad things have really been in D.C. than its leaders want anyone to know.
