Former Olympic athlete and YouTuber Trevor Jacob’s life took a drastic turn two years ago when he purposely crashed a plane in California as part of a viral stunt. Today, Jacob is facing the consequences of his actions as he prepares to begin a six-month stint in federal prison.
In a recent interview with FOX Business, Jacob expressed deep regrets for the moment he thought of the ill-advised stunt. But more than just feeling remorse, he has a strong desire to turn his mistake into a learning opportunity for others. He believes that it is his purpose in life to use his biggest mistakes to benefit others, and he plans to do just that during his next chapter after prison.
The incident that led to Jacob’s arrest and eventual guilty plea occurred while he was piloting a plane over the mountainous Los Padres National Forest. Video footage of the stunt shows the plane experiencing an engine failure and Jacob jumping out with a selfie stick camera in hand. The clip has since garnered 4.5 million views.
In June 2023, the 30-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of destruction and concealment with the intent to obstruct a federal investigation after deliberately destroying the wreckage of the airplane that he intentionally crashed in Santa Barbara County, according to the Justice Department.
Prosecutors argued in a sentencing memorandum that Jacob’s “daredevil” behavior cannot be tolerated. The Justice Department also found that he lied to investigators about the wreckage’s location and even went so far as to remove it and provide false coordinates.
In addition to criminal consequences, Jacob’s actions also had an impact on his pilot’s license. The Federal Aviation Administration temporarily revoked it as part of their own investigation. With five felony charges initially brought against him, Jacob now faces a very different future than he initially envisioned.
In a recent YouTube video, Jacob took full responsibility for his actions and expressed his desire to use his experience to educate younger generations. He wants to warn them about the dangers of social media and the importance of stepping away from it and being active in the real world.
He believes that the faster someone can learn from their mistakes, the faster they can grow and help others. He also stresses the importance of admitting when one is wrong and being a positive influence on society.
“I’m happy to admit my mistakes and say when I’m wrong,” Jacob told FOX Business. “What I am currently learning and have learned and will continue to learn is ideally going to benefit other people from making similar mistakes.”
For Jacob, this experience has been a wake-up call. He now sees that he has been doing the opposite of what he intends to do in the next chapter of his life. Instead of contributing to society, he has been taking away from it.
As he prepares for his time in prison, Jacob is already looking ahead to how he can make a positive impact on the world. He plans to teach others about the dangers of social media and other important lessons he has learned in life. He hopes that by sharing his story, he can prevent others from making similar mistakes and contribute to uplifting humanity in the best way possible.
