Hecklers have become a familiar part of American politics, especially in today’s deeply divided political environment. Politicians on both the left and the right regularly find themselves interrupted, shouted down, or confronted during public appearances.
What is less common is seeing a large portion of an audience join in.
Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger recently experienced exactly that during an appearance at the Old Fiddlers’ Convention in Galax, Virginia, where loud boos greeted the Democratic governor as she addressed the crowd.
According to local ABC affiliate WSET-TV, Spanberger attended the annual convention, which describes itself as the world’s oldest and largest Old Fiddlers’ Convention. The gathering runs throughout the week and draws musicians and spectators from across the region.
Spanberger’s appearance, however, quickly became political.
WSET characterized the crowd’s response as “mixed,” but video from the event showed a substantial amount of booing as Spanberger appeared before attendees. There were supporters in the audience as well, though the hostile reaction was loud enough to attract considerable attention online.
Republican delegates who attended the convention said they were not surprised by the reception.
One delegate pointed to the continuing debate over mid-decade redistricting in Virginia, accusing Spanberger of changing her position after campaigning against efforts that critics say could weaken the political influence of voters outside Northern Virginia.
“She campaigned, and she was asked about doing a mid-decade redistrict to grab power and take voices away from people outside of Northern Virginia,” the delegate told WSET. “She said she wouldn’t do it and then she led the charge.”
Another delegate focused on Spanberger’s campaign emphasis on affordability, questioning whether voters had seen meaningful results.
“If you think about the affordability agenda that has been run on and that she has championed, where are the results of that?” the delegate said.

Spanberger later acknowledged her visit to the convention on social media but did not address the booing directly. Her post instead highlighted positive interactions with people at the event, and photographs suggested that at least some attendees were pleased to meet her.
That difference in perspective soon carried over to social media, where users argued over what the reception actually represented. Critics viewed the boos as evidence of growing dissatisfaction with Spanberger, while supporters emphasized that she also received a warm welcome from portions of the crowd.
The episode comes as Spanberger continues to face political pressure following her November 2025 election.
Immigration policy has been one source of controversy, with Republicans criticizing her approach and accusing her administration of moving Virginia closer to sanctuary-state policies.
Affordability has also emerged as a vulnerability, including among voters who might otherwise be more receptive to Democratic policies. Spanberger made the cost of living a central theme of her campaign, but critics have since attacked tax proposals and other policies moving through Richmond as inconsistent with that message.
That makes the Galax reception more than an awkward moment at a public event. A single crowd cannot determine the political mood of an entire state, and the convention audience should not automatically be treated as representative of Virginia as a whole. Still, the intensity of the response shows that Spanberger is dealing with a sizable and vocal group of voters who are dissatisfied with the direction of her administration.
