Indiana Democrat Jaime West admitted she drank three beers before a viral debate performance that drew national attention. She told Piers Morgan on Monday that the alcohol helped her manage her nerves in a room full of opponents. This confession comes after she made bold claims about firing Republicans and insulting voters during her campaign.

The Debate Comments

Facing Republican Gary Keener Jr. in the race for Fayette County Council, District 4, West saw her campaign shift dramatically when a candidate forum from Oct. 9 spread widely across social media. According to RedState, she responded to a question about unpopular decisions by shouting, “Firing all Republicans!” She also told the audience, “We have guns too” during the heated exchange.

During that same forum, she stated she does not talk to Republicans because she does not like them. RedState reported that she declared MAGA voters are “racist” individuals who “aren’t very intelligent at all.” These comments sparked immediate backlash from voters in the local community. West did not shy away from these remarks even as the video spread online.

The Alcohol Admission

West appeared on “Piers Morgan Uncensored” on Monday to address the controversy surrounding her performance. The New York Post reported that she initially told Morgan, “I mean, maybe a couple” of drinks. Morgan pressed her for a definitive answer, calling it a “chance to be completely honest and transparent.” West then admitted, “I had a Coors Light, I had a beer,” according to the Washington Examiner.

She eventually settled on a specific number after more questions from the host. West said, “Alright, three. Three beers. What do you want me to say, man? I had three beers.” The New York Post noted she argued she “wasn’t that intoxicated” despite the confession. She explained her behavior by saying, “I was nervous! I was going into a room full of Republicans.”

West asserted that she remained knowledgeable regarding Indiana politics. She insisted she does not take back her earlier comments about calling MAGA voters racist or unintelligent. The Washington Examiner noted she maintained her stance on those controversial claims despite the new admission about drinking.

The Upcoming Election

The general election for the Fayette County Council seat is set for Nov. 3. West faces Republican Gary Keener Jr. in the race for District 4. Voters will decide the outcome soon after her public admission about the three beers. The Washington Examiner reported on the timeline for the upcoming vote.

West’s campaign now centers on these two major points of contention for the electorate.
