Investigating the Somali Daycare Case

Every once in a while, a story comes along that’s so absurd, so jaw-droppingly corrupt, that you almost have to admire it — not for the crime, but for the sheer audacity of how easy it apparently is to rob the American taxpayer blind, so long as you have the right friends in the right places.

Let’s talk about Minnesota. Again.

You may have seen the headlines — millions, allegedly hundreds of millions, siphoned out of government programs, like free daycare services and meal programs for kids, through what appears to be a massive web of fraud. Not little nickel-and-dime stuff. Not some overworked bureaucrat accidentally paying out a duplicate check. No — we’re talking shell companies, fake kids, ghost daycares, and—would you look at that—an absolute parade of money flowing to people who had no business touching a government dollar.

But here’s the part that should stop you in your tracks: how does something like this happen under the nose of a fully funded, supposedly functional state government? How does a network of shady nonprofits and “learning centers” allegedly funnel taxpayer money into their own pockets while elected officials sip kombucha in their climate caucuses?

I’ll give you a hint: it doesn’t happen without help.

Because as hilarious as it is that some of these outfits couldn’t even spell “learning center” correctly on their paperwork, they still got approved. They still got paid. They still registered as vendors, filed for government reimbursement, and walked off with fat checks signed—indirectly, of course—by the taxpayers of Minnesota.

So the real question isn’t “how did the scammers pull it off?” It’s “who in the state government helped them?”

Let’s not kid ourselves here. The state didn’t just look the other way. It practically held the door open.

Blue Cross of Minnesota — yes, the same Blue Cross that helps administer Medicaid dollars — has been involved in community outreach initiatives for years. And by “community outreach,” we mean seminars and explainer videos walking people through how to get their slice of the Medicaid pie. You know, how to set up your very own state-funded daycare, how to register for child nutrition reimbursements, how to dot your i’s and cross your t’s on all those complicated forms.

In theory, that’s supposed to help struggling families build legitimate small businesses. In practice? It’s a fraudster starter pack.

And yet, no one in the state capitol seems especially interested in following the money backward. Because to do that, they’d have to ask questions about who approved the paperwork. Who ignored the obvious red flags. Who buried the whistleblowers. And, most of all, who benefitted politically from keeping the grift alive.

Governor Tim Walz? Silent. The DFL machine in Minneapolis? Tighter-lipped than a mafia consigliere. And the media? Oh, they’re very interested — in making sure you don’t ask the wrong questions about culture, immigration, or accountability.

It’s not xenophobic to ask why oversight failed. It’s not “punching down” to wonder how taxpayers got swindled by phantom nonprofits that couldn’t pass a fourth-grade spelling test. It’s basic citizenship. It’s your money. And if you’re not mad yet, maybe you’ve gotten too used to the sound of your wallet being emptied with a smile.

There’s a reason fraud like this keeps happening in places like Minnesota. Because there’s no downside — not for the scammers, and certainly not for the politicians who keep pretending they had no idea.

But you knew. The signs were there. And now the rest of the country’s watching.
