James Talarico Claims Illegal Immigration Has “Benefits

Democrat James Talarico told CNN voters that illegal immigration brings actual benefits to our country. This claim came during a town hall on Wednesday night where he faced six voters from across the political spectrum. The challenges and benefits of illegal border entry were described by him as realities we live with. That statement stands in stark contrast to what most Texas families believe about their own safety.

Talarico also played dumb when asked about the SAVE America Act, a bill that is very popular in Texas, according to the Daily Caller. Regarding the bill’s focus on elections, he questioned the audience to confirm his understanding. He knew the bill well enough to vote on it if he became a senator, yet he pretended ignorance. This act of feigned ignorance undermines his attempt to look like a moderate for the general election.

Shifting Stances on Energy

His current campaign talk about supporting oil and gas contradicts his past words to dismantle the industry. He previously said the oil and gas sector was not going to last. He now promises voters to oppose his own party over oil and gas interference and the other party regarding renewables. He also previously spoke about dismantling capitalism entirely. His current political vocabulary differs greatly from the one he employed previously.

Tax Cuts and Debt

When the topic turned to the national debt, he blamed Republicans for the rising costs. He criticized the One Big Beautiful Bill Act as a major contributor to the growing debt. Talarico stated that a bill passed a year ago gave $3 trillion in tax cuts to the top 1% people who don’t need it. He pointed to closing billionaire loopholes as the solution instead. He also mentioned the war in Iran as a factor, though the full context of that remark was cut short in the report.

Abortion and Faith

The discussion covered many heavy topics including abortion, antisemitism, and transgender surgeries for minors. Talarico argued that scientifically valid sex education and healthcare access can reduce the number of abortions. He noted that the Catholic Church has led on these issues before. He stated that uniting to ensure scientifically valid, age-appropriate sex education and access to contraception and healthcare, which the Catholic Church has championed, reduces abortions, a conclusion supported by research showing such policy levers work. Provided it remains equitable, he also stated his backing for voter ID.

He tried to smooth over his past controversial remarks about defining God with human categories. He confessed that he was perhaps behaving in an annoying manner. But admitting he was annoying does not fix the fact that he told voters illegal immigration helps us. Texas families deserve to know exactly who they are voting for. We cannot trust a candidate who lies about the facts of our elections and the benefits of breaking our laws. The question remains whether voters will accept this rebranding or demand the truth.
