New Band Added to Super Bowl Festivities

The NFL just can’t help itself. With the 2026 Super Bowl right around the corner, football fans were already scratching their heads over the announcement of Bad Bunny as the halftime show performer—a move that raised plenty of eyebrows. But this week, the league took it a step further by slapping its core audience in the face yet again, announcing that the game will kick off with a performance by none other than anti-American punk band Green Day.

Yes, that Green Day. The same group whose lead singer, Billie Joe Armstrong, has spent the better part of the last decade spewing venom toward Donald Trump, his supporters, and the country that made him a millionaire. This is who the NFL thinks is a unifying voice fit to usher in one of America’s biggest annual events.

The Super Bowl is supposed to be about three things: football, food, and fun. Not anti-Trump rants, not Hamas shout-outs, and certainly not a middle finger to millions of loyal fans who tune in despite the league’s social justice detours.

Green Day, for those with short memories, has a long record of going off the rails. From their 2016 “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA” chant at the AMAs, to Armstrong yelling “f*** America” and threatening to renounce his citizenship after Roe v. Wade was overturned, they’ve made it crystal clear where they stand. And spoiler: it’s not with the average American NFL fan.

Even more recently, Armstrong tweaked the lyrics to one of the band’s songs during a Coachella performance to show solidarity with Palestinians—reportedly including Hamas. You know, the same group that carried out terror attacks against civilians and sparked global outrage. That’s who’s getting musical shoutouts now?

Roger Goodell seems determined to treat the league’s fan base like a punching bag. From the “It Takes All of Us” end zone slogans to “Choose Love” decals slapped on helmets, the league continues to preach while millions of fans just want to watch the game. This latest move is just more proof that the NFL is no longer hiding its contempt for the people who built its empire.

Look, nobody’s saying Green Day can’t play music or have their own opinions. But this isn’t Coachella. This is the Super Bowl. The one time of year that families of all stripes come together to enjoy something without having politics shoved down their throats. And instead, we’re getting a punk band with a history of political outbursts and anti-American rhetoric headlining the pregame festivities.

Maybe the league figures it won’t take a ratings hit. And maybe they’re right—football isn’t going anywhere. But you can be sure more and more people are tuning out of the spectacle around it, ditching the halftime nonsense and opting for alternatives like Turning Point USA’s halftime show.

The NFL had a chance to bring people together with this year’s event. Instead, it chose to poke them in the eye. Again.

If (or when) Green Day goes off-script and launches into some half-baked rant about fascism or flags or Roe v. Wade, don’t expect any sympathy for Goodell and company. They knew exactly what they were doing.
