In a development that adds yet another layer of tension to the already fragile region, a senior U.S. official has confirmed that Israel is responsible for a series of deadly explosions in Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah members. The attacks, which involved the detonation of explosives hidden in pagers used by the Iran-backed Hezbollah, have left at least 12 people dead and injured nearly 3,000 others. The first blast rocked Beirut on September 18 which was followed by a second series of device explosions the following day.
The timing of these blasts could not have been more ominous. On Wednesday, during the funeral for Hezbollah members killed in Tuesday’s explosions, multiple new blasts were heard in Beirut, causing further chaos. According to Hezbollah’s Al Manar TV, the explosions were not limited to Beirut but occurred in several areas across Lebanon. In a coordinated attack, walkie-talkies were reported to have detonated, suggesting a broader scope of technological sabotage aimed at destabilizing Hezbollah’s communication networks.

The ripple effect of these attacks did not stop at explosions. Hezbollah quickly responded, claiming to have launched rocket attacks on Israeli artillery positions.
Behind the scenes, Israel’s involvement in these attacks was confirmed by U.S. officials, though Secretary of State Antony Blinken made it clear that the United States had no prior knowledge or involvement. When asked about the escalating situation, Blinken stressed that “all parties must avoid actions that could further inflame the conflict.” His comments come as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) continue their operations along the northern border, engaging in both offensive and defensive measures. Israel’s Northern Command has been on high alert, conducting brigade-level exercises that simulate combat in enemy territory, further underscoring the heightened state of readiness.
