Netflix Makes Changes To Subscription Model

Ladies and gentlemen, gather ’round for the latest in the ever-evolving world of streaming!

On Thursday, Netflix announced a bombshell decision that’s sure to shake up your binge-watching habits: the streaming giant is discontinuing its Basic plan for subscribers in the U.S. and France. That’s right, folks—if you’re on the Basic tier, it’s time to make a move or risk losing access to your favorite shows and movies.

Netflix’s Basic plan, which cost $11.99 per month and was ad-free, is now a relic of the past. The company broke the news through updates to their Help Center pages for both U.S. and French plans and pricing. “The Basic plan has been discontinued,” the pages stated, adding, “You can change your plan at any time.” This announcement came during the release of Netflix’s second-quarter earnings, following similar moves earlier this year for subscribers in the U.K. and Canada.

Let’s break it down: Initially, Netflix made the Basic tier unavailable to new or rejoining members in the U.K. and Canada, and later did the same for American customers last summer. Only existing Basic plan users could keep their subscriptions. But now, it’s the end of the line for everyone on this tier in the U.S. and France.

Netflix’s decision appears strategic. The company indicated that removing the Basic plan in the U.K. and Canada spurred growth in their ad-supported tier. This cheaper alternative, priced at $6.99 per month in the U.S., includes two streams, high definition, and downloads, proving to be quite popular. In fact, Netflix reported a 34% increase in its ad-supported member base in Q2, thanks to this shift.

For those unwilling to tolerate ads, Netflix still offers two ad-free plans: the Standard plan at $15.99 per month and the Premium plan at $22.99 per month. Both options provide more features and higher-quality streaming.

As of the second quarter, Netflix boasts over 277 million subscribers worldwide, with more than 84 million in the U.S. and Canada. The company is optimistic about its financial future, projecting a 14%-15% growth in revenue for the full year and a slight increase in its annual operating margin to 26%.

In a statement, Netflix shared its ongoing goal: “Our goal is to increase our operating margin each year, though the rate of expansion will vary year to year.” With these changes, Netflix aims to continue evolving and adapting to the competitive streaming landscape.

So, if you’re a Basic plan subscriber, it’s time to consider your options. Will you move to the ad-supported tier, shell out a bit more for an ad-free experience, or perhaps rethink your streaming choices altogether? Stay tuned because in the world of Netflix, change is always just a click away.
