Nashville Remarks Draw Attention to Behn Campaign

Well, it looks like Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District has found itself in the middle of a very real political reality show—one that even the pedal taverns Aftyn Behn claims to hate wouldn’t be able to drown out with their Bluetooth speakers.

Behn, the Democratic candidate vying for the seat vacated by Rep. Mark Green, had what you might call a less-than-inspiring moment on live television over the weekend. During an interview on MS Now (yes, that’s MSNBC with a fresh coat of paint), anchor Catherine Rampell gave her the chance to clear the air about a 2020 social media post where Behn allegedly praised the idea of burning down police stations. Rampell asked if she still stood by the post, which read: “Good morning, especially to the 54% of Americans that believe burning down a police station is justified.”

Seems pretty straightforward. A yes-or-no moment. Golden opportunity for a little clarity. But Behn, perhaps taking a page out of the D.C. double-speak handbook, chose instead to dodge with, “I’m not gonna engage in cable news talking points.”

Translation? She didn’t deny it. She just didn’t want to talk about it while sitting on a national stage. Probably not the best look when you’re trying to convince folks in Tennessee—especially the ones who don’t think torching law enforcement buildings is an acceptable form of “protest”—that you’re ready to represent their interests in Congress.

But wait, it gets better. Behn’s greatest hits don’t stop at fiery takes on police stations. She’s also gone viral for a rather eye-rolling rant about Nashville, a city that, inconveniently for her, happens to partially fall within the district she’s campaigning to represent. “I hate the city, I hate the bachelorettes, I hate the pedal taverns, I hate country music,” she once said. Just the kind of charm you’d want from someone trying to win over voters who, you know, live there.

After getting roasted online for the anti-Nashville tirade, Behn tried to walk it back, claiming she doesn’t actually hate the city. But the internet never forgets, and neither do voters, especially when you trash their hometown and culture and then ask for their support.

Adding to the circus, Behn recently welcomed former Vice President Kamala Harris to campaign with her in the Music City. Harris, who’s still trying to find her footing after the Biden administration’s slow-motion collapse, might not be the best endorsement ticket in 2025. But maybe that’s right on-brand for a candidate who’s already said she’d be willing to get arrested to defy abortion laws. Because nothing screams “lawmaker” like proudly advertising your willingness to break the law.

On the other side of this matchup is Republican Matt Van Epps—combat veteran, West Point grad, and former Deputy COO for the Tennessee Governor’s Office. He’s not just talking about putting America First; he’s endorsed by President Donald Trump and ready to do it. Van Epps has said Behn’s platform is more radical than New York’s Zohran Mamdani, a self-proclaimed socialist. And considering Behn said Mamdani’s agenda “mirrors her own,” that comparison isn’t exactly off-base.

So here we are, with a December 2 special election looming, and voters in Tennessee’s 7th district have a choice: a grounded conservative combat vet with real experience—or a candidate who allegedly cheered on riots, trashed part of her own district, and won’t answer basic questions on live TV.

Grab the popcorn. This one’s not over yet.
