Hello everyone! Have you ever heard an old story take on a new life thanks to a viral video? Well, that’s exactly what happened with a shocking incident involving a Putnam County sheriff’s deputy and a chemical pipe bomb.
Let’s rewind to April in Jacksonville, Florida. According to WJXT-TV, a routine traffic stop turned explosive—literally. A sheriff’s deputy pulled over a truck driven by Charles Legault because the license plate didn’t match the vehicle. Routine as it might have seemed, what happened next was anything but ordinary.
During the search, a pipe bomb filled with chlorine gas exploded, injuring Sgt. Ryan Owens, as reported by The National Desk. The blast sent a cloud of poisonous gas and powdered particles into the air, landing Owens in the hospital. Thankfully, he has since recovered.
Legault, a 60-year-old man, is now facing numerous charges, only one of which is directly related to the explosion. The charges range from aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer to possession of methamphetamine with intent to sell, maintaining a drug vehicle, and armed trafficking of methamphetamine.
To add to the drama, authorities also arrested Legault’s roommate, Patrick McGregor, a 64-year-old convicted felon. McGregor is now facing his own set of drug and weapons charges.
Initially, the authorities held back the injured sergeant’s bodycam footage while the investigation was ongoing. But on June 4, the video found its way onto a YouTube channel called The CrimePiece, where it quickly went viral, amassing over 4.4 million views.
The video is as intense as you might imagine. It shows Sgt. Owens rummaging through the truck’s cluttered front seat. Just as he declares, “Yeah, it’s — it’s good,” the screen fills with a sudden flash and a deafening bang. Owens staggers back, shouting in shock, “What the f***?” His distress is palpable as he moves towards his patrol car, trying to make sense of what just happened.
For those curious enough to watch, a word of caution: the footage contains strong language and graphic content that some viewers might find disturbing.
Why has this video struck such a chord? Perhaps it’s a mix of morbid curiosity and the stark reminder of the daily risks law enforcement officers face. These men and women step into danger every day, and moments like these underscore the unpredictable nature of their job. One second, everything seems routine, and the next, their lives—and the lives of their loved ones—are turned upside down.
