This is the kind of tragedy that makes your blood boil and your heart ache all at once.
A young West Virginia National Guard member, Andrew Wolfe, is clinging to life in a hospital room, barely able to give a thumbs up and wiggle his toes — and we’re supposed to call that “good news.” His fellow Guardsman, Sarah Beckstrom, wasn’t so lucky. She’s gone. Dead. Shot in the line of duty. And for what?
Allegedly gunned down by an Afghan national who was let into this country on “humanitarian parole.” That’s right. He was part of the 76,000 Afghan refugees brought in under the Biden administration in 2021. And not just any refugee — Rahmanullah Lakanwal allegedly came here on a fast-track “special immigrant visa” because of his past work with the CIA. Wrap your head around that.
This man, who had trouble assimilating, who showed clear signs of mental illness and isolation (according to emails obtained by the Associated Press), who came from a war zone and clearly carried his demons with him, was allowed to walk freely in our nation’s capital. And now two American heroes — yes, heroes — have paid the price.
You can almost hear the excuses forming already. The system failed him. He needed help. We didn’t do enough to support his transition.
Tell that to the Beckstrom family. Tell that to Wolfe’s loved ones, watching monitors beep beside a hospital bed, praying to God that his next sign of life isn’t his last.
And while we’re at it, maybe someone should tell the Biden administration. Because it sure looks like no one there was listening — or caring. They opened the floodgates. Rushed tens of thousands of unknowns into this country with little oversight, little screening, and now, little accountability. What was sold to us as a humanitarian effort is now bleeding American lives.
And here’s the gut punch: Beckstrom and Wolfe weren’t just serving in the National Guard. They had been deputized by the U.S. Marshals Service less than 24 hours before the shooting. Let that sink in. They were trying to help this country secure law and order, and they were taken down on American soil by someone who, allegedly, never should have been here in the first place.
The worst part? This will barely make a ripple outside conservative media. They’ll tiptoe around the suspect’s immigration status. They’ll use language like “complicated tragedy” or “isolated incident.”

But this isn’t complicated. It’s crystal clear. It’s a consequence of reckless, politically-driven immigration policies. We were told we were saving lives by opening our doors. And now our own are dying — allegedly at the hands of one of those we “saved.”
President Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance have promised to restore law, order, and common sense to our immigration system. And this — this — is exactly why that promise matters more than ever.
Because if we don’t learn from Sarah Beckstrom’s death, we’re doomed to repeat it. And next time, it could be in your city. Your neighborhood. Your family.
How many more American service members have to die before we say: enough?
