When appreciating the natural beauty of our world, it is important to also respect and protect it.
Unfortunately, not everyone shares this sentiment. A recent incident at Lake Mead in Nevada has sparked outrage as tourists were caught on video destroying prehistoric rock formations at the national park.
On April 7th, two adult men were seen pushing over pieces of rock at the Redstone Dunes Trail at Lake Mead. In the video, you can watch as the vandals cause irreversible damage to the ancient formations. The NPS called the incident “disgusting” and “appalling,” as it takes millions of years for these rock formations to form.
“It takes millions of years for these rock formations to form, and then you get a few idiots out there that are destroying all that work of nature…it’s pretty appalling,” Lake Mead National Recreation Area Public Information Officer John Haynes said.
“Information from visitors is often very helpful to investigators,” the NPS said. “If you were on the Redstone Dunes Trail on the evening of Sunday, April 7, 2024, or if you have information that could help identify the suspects, please submit a tip.
It is deeply concerning that individuals would show such blatant disregard for the natural world. Not only is it illegal to cause damage to national park property, but it also goes against the principles of conservation and preservation. National parks, such as Lake Mead, are meant to be enjoyed and appreciated for their natural beauty, not destroyed and desecrated.
In addition to facing possible jail time and fines, the vandals in this incident also potentially endangered the life of the young girl who was with them. The vibrations caused by their actions could have caused other rocks to give way, putting her at risk of serious injury or even death. This is a prime example of the need for responsible and respectful behavior when visiting national parks.
“More of those sandstone rocks could have given way through vibrations causing serious injury or death to the young girl,” another person said. “He should also be charged with child endangerment. My husband, daughters and I have hiked that trail, it’s gorgeous. Please send them to jail.”

Thankfully, authorities are actively searching for the suspects in hopes of bringing them to justice. However, the NPS is also asking for the public’s help in identifying the vandals. Information from visitors is often crucial in investigations, so if you or anyone you know has any information about this incident, please submit a tip to the NPS.
It is important for all of us to remember that we are merely visitors in nature’s home. As such, we have a responsibility to leave it unharmed and undisturbed for future generations to enjoy. National parks are meant to be protected for their intrinsic value and should be treated with the utmost respect.
