The ongoing crisis at the United States’ southern border has been making international headlines for weeks. The arrival of a FerroMex train carrying migrants to the border of Mexico and the United States only highlights the issue.

FOX News sources capture a FerroMex train bursting with migrants out of Zacatecas heading to our southern border right now… cheering and clearly not heeding the message: “do not come”@FoxNews pic.twitter.com/YflMwXrWqu— Griff Jenkins (@GriffJenkins) September 17, 2023
Video taken on Sunday shows the train packed with migrants, with many hanging onto the sides of the cars and loudly cheering. The situation has been described as a humanitarian crisis as migrants, families with infants, and unaccompanied minors journey toward a better future.
But the US government sends a firm message to illegal crossings: do not come. Border Patrol agents along the Rio Grande Valley have seen 2,000 illegal crossings daily for several days straight and have had to resort to street releases because shelters are packed.
In response, the Biden Administration is considering having migrants wait out their asylum screening in Texas and monitor them using ankle bracelets. The proposal is meant to lessen the flow of illegal migrants at the southern border.

DHS has, however, already removed or returned over 200,000 people since May. Texas Governor Gregg Abbott has set up a busing program to transfer migrants to “sanctuary cities” like New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles to provide relief to border towns. He argues that Texas cities have shouldered a considerable burden, and other cities must take responsibility for the crisis.
At the same time, the administration has taken the state to court over a barrier at the Rio Grande and another built with shipping containers in Arizona.
The situation is complicated because US agents are turning away many asylum seekers at the border on government instructions. The situation is dire and complex, and as the Ferromex train packed with migrants attests, there is no easy or quick solution to the crisis.
