A Trial Decades in the Making
Nearly 27 years have passed since the attacks, yet a military judge has only now set a trial date for the alleged mastermind. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and three co-defendants are scheduled to go on trial on June 5, 2028.Following a recent decision that prevented prosecutors from utilizing statements Mohammed gave to FBI agents in 2007, this timeline emerged. The judge found those statements were tainted by coercive treatment during his time in U.S. custody. The government chose not to appeal this decision because an appeal could jeopardize the 2028 trial date.
John Ryan, a former chief of the Department with the Port Authority Police, described the long wait as an “open sore.” He told Fox News Digital that the wound gets “even more hurtful when we get to anniversaries.” Ryan dedicated nine months to the recovery efforts at Ground Zero. He noted that he is still involved because the five people held at Guantánamo Bay have not been convicted. The case has seen a collapsed plea agreement and repeated changes in military judges.
Why the Truth Gets Lost
While the legal fight drags on, conspiracy theories about the attacks have not faded away. James Lindsay, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations, stated these theories “began almost as soon as the Twin Towers came down” He told the Washington Examiner that new generations now stumble on articles or TikToks that claim to tell the real story. These online narratives can be quite powerful for young people who were not alive in 2001.
Per the Washington Examiner, warped stories spread easily on social media. Videos casting Osama bin Laden’s 2002 manifesto in a favorable light recently exploded in popularity. Young users cited the al Qaeda leader’s “Letter to America” as a source of enlightenment about the past. These clips racked up millions of views despite the official 9/11 Commission Report being released in 2004. That report provided 585 pages of details based on interviews with more than 1,200 people.
The Cost of Government Secrecy
The National Institute of Standards and Technology conducted a nearly three-year investigation into the tower collapses. They physically examined pieces of steel salvaged from Ground Zero to understand how the buildings fell. Even with this effort, an entire online community continues to believe jet fuel could not have melted the steel. Lindsay explained that people try to explain a horrific event when they have a preset agenda. He observed that “relationship between government secrecy, leaked or released documents, and public revelations of government malfeasance has proven to be a powerful acid of institutional trust”
This secret activity comes at a high price for public confidence. Sean Passananti, whose father died on the 100th floor of the North Tower, remarked that the delay makes the case feel like a “twilight zone.” He finds it unbelievable that families must still fight for justice for the worst terrorist attack on U.S. soil. A fifth defendant, Ramzi bin al-Shibh, is being handled separately after being found mentally incompetent to stand trial. The judge set the trial date 18 months after the prosecution’s proposed start to allow time for legal disputes.
