Two former chief of staffs to California governors have pled guilty to serious felonies. Both men are now awaiting their sentencing in federal court. This marks a rare moment where top state aides face prison for fraud. The Federalist reported that California may soon have back-to-back governors whose top aides go to jail.
In San Diego, Paul Randall received a 30-year federal prison sentence. He submitted $270 million in fake Medi-Cal claims over just 11 months. Several co-defendants in this massive ring are still waiting for their own sentences. The schemes have become so wild that they look like mass pillaging.
Millions Stolen and No Checks
A former operator of homeless service facilities also pled guilty to wire fraud. To launch the high-end Six Seven Five Lounge restaurant and nightclub, he invested over $1 million. The court mandated a personal money judgment of forfeiture totaling $1,960,463.39 against the defendant. This money came from the very funds meant to help the poor.
Another official admitted to “taking more than $180,000 in bribes and kickbacks.” The lack of oversight is now clear to everyone watching. As one source noted, “There’s no vetting. There’s no auditing. There’s no accounting. It was just a rush to push … money out the door.”
Newsom Runs While State Burns
While these scandals unfold, Governor Gavin Newsom is planning a run for president. He recently told CNN he would not run if Kamala Harris decides to enter the race. This statement is widely viewed as a political tactic rather than a real promise. Newsom knows the party apparatus spent more than $1 billion on Harris in 2024.
Despite the losses, Newsom believes he is the only viable Democrat left to run. He claims credit for stopping President Trump’s redistricting plan in Texas. The state remains under total Democratic control with supermajorities in both houses. Fifteen years have passed since the last Republican governor departed from office.
