Democrats Join Republicans on Fraud Bill

More than 140 House Democrats voted with all Republicans on Wednesday to make the National Fraud Enforcement Division permanent. The bill passed in a massive 352 to 72 vote, with every opponent being a Democrat. President Donald Trump’s White House first announced this new division within the Department of Justice in January 2026. The administration declared its goal is to fight fraud impacting the federal government, federally funded programs, and private citizens. This move has become a major tool against political enemies, according to a release by the White House.

Earlier this year, Vice President JD Vance sent Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and state Attorney General Keith Ellison to the fraud division for a possible criminal probe. Republicans charged that Walz and Ellison assisted in facilitating a scandal harming Minnesota’s social welfare programs. Both officials admitted taxpayer dollars were taken advantage of but claimed the situation is worse than reality as a political attack. The Trump administration highlighted actions in Minnesota, claiming the state was undergoing a “fraud epidemic.” This vote makes the government’s ability to hunt fraud permanent and nonpartisan.

Progressive Pushback and Republican Responses

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., offered “tepid support” to the legislation while noting a fraud division already exists within the DOJ. He described the bill as “hardly some kind of great breakthrough in law enforcement or criminal justice.” Raskin said it is perhaps the “least offensive piece of legislative flotsam and jetsam” in recent days, according to Fox News. Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., responded that the conversation is about a “permanent, nonpartisan commitment” to do better. Van Drew claimed that citizens are “getting tired of all the money that has been wasted.”

He added that pretending everything was perfect a couple of years ago is false because “we know better” about the corruption. Raskin spent time accusing Trump and his allies of corruption instead of prosecuting actual fraud cases. The administration’s announcement highlighted how the division targets waste in states run by Democrats. This includes the specific referral of Walz and Ellison for their alleged role in the state’s welfare issues.

What Comes Next for the Program

The bill now moves forward as a permanent fixture in the Department of Justice structure. Vice President Vance has already convened a task force to push these reforms in Congress. The White House pushed this “watershed” fraud-fighting reform as a key priority for the new year. No further votes are scheduled for this specific bill since it has already passed the House floor. The focus now shifts to how the division will handle future referrals like the one involving Minnesota.

Republicans declared war on “organized theft” with this government fraud crackdown. The vote count shows a clear split where only Democrats opposed the measure. This action solidifies the legal framework for investigating fraud in federal programs. The division will continue to operate under the authority granted by this new permanent status. Future investigations will rely on this established division to track down stolen taxpayer money.
